SC10 4x4 Thread

Looks like I'll be another proud owner of a clutch basket next week. Ran my truck Saturday and installed a HD slipper pad. Getting some decent slip out of it and by the end of a pack you could really feel it's acceleration getting slower from the slipping pad. Didn't melt anything but definately heated it up.
Other than that I worked on my driving skills and was getting more use to the truck. Still didn't complete a single fully clean lap but by the end of practice I wasn't flipping it over every time and had most sections down pretty good. Can't wait to race this truck again.
The only issue I had other than the slipper was a shock shaft pulling out of the rod end on the right rear. Landed from one jump on the top of another and wrenched the shaft out of the rod end. Dropped in a little CA glue then re-threaded the shaft into the rod end and no more problem. Will be tearing down the truck this week though to see if anything else is damaged...figure better safe than sorry. I beat the snot out of this truck and so far it has taken whatever I can throw at it...which is saying a lot!

So I'm running the LRP X12L 4.5 in my sc10 4x4 on a 1/8th scale track and have some gearing questing. I'm currently geared at 11/62 and after a 5 minut run this weekend, the motor was at 235. What should I do gearing wise to get the temps down? try 60 or 58 with a 12? I know there are the gearing charts but those arent helping any right now. Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

lrp's seem to run hot naturally. i would say go to 12 but i bet it wont help. what speedo? any timing? as someone else mentioned my wheel hexes where rubbing the bearings. causing drag. also make sure you temp your slipper when your done! if its ridiculously hot then your slipping so much your motor is not happy.

The manufacturer probably had a card or something stating a safe temp, but in general about 150 - 170 could be considered safe. Also keep in mind that when you actually temp, your motor was probably hotter at some point too, so kind of factor that in.

with my slipper issues it was up to 160 what seems to be normal is 100-130 while 130 is starting to get hot.

160 is where most motors max, X12s max at 210. Staying at least 10 under the max recommended temp is easily safe and achievable. Remember, brushless motors have a sweet spot between timing and gearing. They'll also run hot OVER or UNDER geared! No need to worry about the motor falling off that hot with 2S. 1S most motors will start falling off around 140.

Ditto. I run a 5.5t with a 16/62 gearing and I'm only hitting 150-160 on a large 8th scale track with long straights. Goign from 14t to 16t didn't change my temps at all...14t may have been slightly undergeared, and 16t might be slightly overgeared to keep the temps as low as possible for my truck and track, but I like the extra speed I get, and temps are still well within acceptable limits.
Though 235 sounds hot, even for an undergeared LRP. (LRP motors run a little warmer than Tekin or Novak motors in the same setup.)
I would check for binding on the hubs (wheel nuts tightened too tight) as well as in the gearbox/motor plate. The 3 screws that hold the gearbox together can protrude and rub on the internal components of the main driveline.
Lastly, how tight is your belt? If you run it too tight, that can add extra heat as well.
With a 4.5 geared so low, you would have so much torque you may not notice this other binding...

Honestly, I have never heard of undergearing with brushledd motors. I'll go to 14 and see how that runs. Thanks.

not too surprised, that seems to be one of the common things that people don't know about. Whats really bad is that people then smoke these motors that cost a lot more than what the older brushed stuff does.

[QUOTE=Cain;9436662]Where are you topping out at down the longest straight? After talking with the Late Big Jim, one of the premier motor guys of his time, he advised me to always start my gearing to top out towards the end of the longest straight, then adjust it from there. Based on his suggestions, I have never overheated a motor since. Give it a try (assuming all else is fine with the vehicle)
It tops out right around the first 1/3rd to the middle of the straight and I have a ton of accelleration out of the corners. I'm gonaa try going 14/62 and see how that goes.

Definitely gear up.

My LRP 550 5.5T runa between 140-180 geared 14/62 w/10deg of advanced timing, temps seem to vary from weekend to weekend, if in don't servise the trucks diff's and difff cases they seems to bind a little causing heat.
Hey Lod, when your motor was 230ish, was the speedo hot?
