Yes, a B6 top shaft will work on the layback and laydown, but not the new standup. I suggest adding shims to center the top shaft with the idler gear and prevent the gear from contacting the transmission case.

You do need to shim it to fit. Don’t quote me on it, but I believe it needs 1mm of shimming. .5mm on each side. Someone me correct me if I’m wrong.

For those of you wanting to convert your B6. This is pretty cheap.

i did not try yet but adding 1mm one side or the other rubs the gearbox. Perfect fit should be 0.5 each side

Be carefull here. B6 top shaft is 1mm wider than .1 top shaft, which means that it is .5mm wider each side. That results in a tighter mesh and you could find a hard spot. Same thing if you set a tight mesh between pinion and spur gear. I don't know what would be better, let it go as is with the hard spot or sand the plastic iddler gear and see what happens. Same tooth count but maybe smaller tooth

No, it's the same: 48 pitch. Otherwise the idler/diff would be different and incompatible between the B6 and B6.1

The way it was explained on the FB post (where you grabbed those pics)...is that the pitch is slightly different between the old and new top shafts. It would have probably been more cost effective if you would have just sold your old car and put the money toward the new one.

i paid 270€ for the b6 that is still new. If i sell it for 150€(if lucky) then it's -120€ balance. Now buy a new one for 320€. Total balance of -440€ + the time to rebuild the car with stock parts + the time i have it at home taking dust.
take the b6 -270€ and update it, - maximum of 120€ = -390. Quite similar and then update other parts if broken.
minimun differente of 50€, should be like 100€ differente.

As mentioned before, several of us have already done the assembly. There are no issues with the mesh of the gears. The width we're referring to is the difference in bearing seat width between the two. The older top-shaft is 1mm narrower, and it should be shimmed to center the gear and prevent side loading of the bearings.

Also, what is the blue stuff between the mic and the gear in the 2nd photo?

Well, i can't believe it. Assembled the gearbox again to record a video so you can see the hard spot and now is not there. now it's a tiny hard spot, nothing to worry about. I must clean all this stuff.
I were refering to the top shaft gear width, not the bearing to bearing width.

Do you mean gear "diameter"? That is what is illustrated in the photos with the micrometer.
