Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

Thanks for that faqcya!
What's the deal with a spur/pinion gear cover with the TLR or Exotek laydown transmissions?
Never seen one, apart from the tiny Exotek offering.
I want to run on dirt with a laydown and my pinion and spur will have short life spans without some sort of cover, what's the go?

Frank Root told me about 8 months ago. Not to worry about a gear cover. The factory guys have never run with one.

So Im a onroad guy mainly for the last ten years So for Me easy to drive would be better then the fastest off the line. A car that would have rear traction is I guess more important then the fastest acceleration.
I'd definitely recommend 3-gear.

Frank was probably referencing dirt here in America. Where the surface is smooth packed clay. I know in Australia they have dirt tracks with a little bit of loose dirt, and possibly some tiny pebbles.

If that is the type of dirt you are talking about, then you might need to put some effort into keeping dirt and debris away from the gear.

JConcepts make the S2 Worlds body for the 22 3.0 lay down setup. Losi also makes a lay down specific body. The Yokomo YZ2 body fits the 3.0 with a lay down so any body for that car should fit. All of these bodys are available on Amain. I use a Yokomo YZ2 body on my 3.0 that has an Exotek lay down transmission. The right body will eliminate the need of a gear cover. The stock 3.0 body probably won't work to well to keep dirt out.

Body does a good job of protecting stuff getting in that area on a mid motor car.

Will a 2.0 body fit a 3.0 chassis?

The track I'll be running on is indeed loose dirt.
I ended up getting ripped off on the used 22 3.0 I bought off eBay and wound up getting a new 3.0 kit for a great price from a hobby shop clearing 3.0 stock.
The YZ2 body looks nifty.
Looks like it offers good spur protection, too.
Bit of a bummer having to buy a second body, though,I guess I'll pick one up from A Main when I grab the Exotek tranny.
Has anyone thought of 3D printing a laydown spur cover?

Right on,I've seen that cover.
Might be the go.

Can anyone confirm if the X Factory Infinity kit will work with the Exotek laydown tranny?

If you are referring to the forward mounted shock kit, yes it will work. You will have to trim some carbon fiber where the trans mounts to the kit shock tower.

Hey guys, does the stock kit Losi body fit the lay down transmission or do you have to have a lay down trans body as well? - Thanks

I think you need the lay down to cover the spur. However you might be able to use the standard one with a spur cover or jconcepts do one I believe.

I just picked up a new in box TLR 22 3.0 from ebay, body painted, all else new in bags. Took me a few nights to assemble, was a lot of fun. Just pending electronics now to give it a try. This was my first kit I assembled.
