new stock motor binary
#211
Well there are 3 Binary Stock motors now
Out law - 4 mag epoxy balance
BRCA - 4 mag drill balance
Roar - monster can (2 mag) with drill arm
The 2 drill arms are the arm from the outlaw, but drill balanced. So its basicly a monster with 4 less laminations

Well, I seem to be a little late on this Binary thing, but I thought I'd post my experience.
IT'S FAST!!! (Or my driving just got a lot better
).
I got the standard, non dyno tuned version and did all the recommended cleaning, cutting, and shimming. Unfortunately, I WAS having problems with my lathe, and ended up putting a giant gash in the comm which required me cutting it down to .286 before running it for the first time.
I also had a set of used, almost dead Birdman biased brushes that I thought I'd give a shot so I threw them in - chipped, and very used with some new Trinity Red springs.
At first, I dropped 3 teeth on my pinion following some of the advice I'd read on this thread and it was a DOG!!!! Very, very, slow.
When I went back to the same pinion (35T) that I had been running on my Monster stock, the motor was VERY fast. Whereas before, I had not been able to turn a sub 15 second lap, now, I had several 14.7 - 14.9's with a couple 14.6 and 14.5's.
Now there's a good possibility my driving just improved, as well as a possiblity that I'm just REALLY working the Binary and significantly decreasing it's lifespan (I have no temp gun).
With that said, I'm a HUGE fan of this motor.

no torque, nothing, zippo, nadda, if your track is any bit on the tighter side, any bit, run the monster, if it truly is open, then run the epic, but first go get your magnets zapped.

I have 3 with all sorts of different brush, spring combo's, and shunt location. None of my motors perform the same with the same brushes or springs.
thats my .02

instead of making a new thread i thought id just bump this one.
I just fried my epic binary2 stock.
i thought i was having problems with my esc (a fairly old GM v3r) where i couldnt get power to the motor. i could control the servo, so i was a little baffled as all my connections were fine. so i left the esc on and started fiddling with connections, trying my radio from time to time. I started to hear a little sizzle and promptly disconnected my batteries and shut off the esc. to my dismay a nice smoke trail was coming out of the motor. It had siezed and it was all i could do to break it free.
i had never ran the motor before trying to test it just now. guess im buying new elecs

Been messing around with this motor for a while. On the Binary2, I'm geared at 8.23 final drive on a mid-sized flowing track. Has anyone else geared this high? Also, has anyone tried the ROAR Binary? The one that's the Binary arm in a Monster can. Would you gear this the same as a Monster? I heard it just has a little more RPM.

yodace- the Binary is designed to be a RPM motor, so you won't get much torque out of it, a Monster or P2K2 would be more suitable. Putnam's website is http://www.putnampropulsion.com
