Actually if you were to rip part of the antenna off you will have range issues even though it is 2.4ghz.

Most issues like what you are describing is due...

Most issues like what you are describing is due to the use of the wrong gearing. I would drop a few more teeth on the pinion and see what happens.

Sounds like you need to adjust the LVC (low voltage cutoff). I have mine set for auto-lipo so that I can run 2s or 3s and not have to adjust it everytime I change batteries..
