Cain - The VTX1's come wired with 14ga that is pretty flexible. You can always put 16ga on it if you want.

Its the motor killing the ESC. The Tekin holds up to bad motors better since it doesn't use sensor as much. Overall the Tekin is no where near as tough as the Viper, the last three races I watched a different RX8 smoke...and I have been running my VTX8 since it came out and I have 4 of them, 100% rock solid. I don't cut mine any slack, they are at every big event on the east coast...running it as hard as possible. Its without a doubt, the toughest, most reliable ESC for 1/8 scale on the market.

You must cushion the ESC(any ESC) from hard hits, and even better...land on the downside of the jump. That's what landings are for....the flat ground is typically where the goat chasers land.

is there some way to test the motor to see if it will do this? Maybe even have a protection against bad motor in the VTX8?

Also, is it possible for the VTX8 to do sensorless with some coding or is it something specific to the hardware?

Yea I'll be at TRCR to race Friday and run on the new track layout, my Armor should be here tomorrow and with camping trips almost over for the year it's time to get back up to speed with my rigs for the gold cup.:nod:

ridgerunner1 - sorry I wont be there Friday, sunday probably. And yes for Gold Cup. But if you look around there are many people running e1D Chassis Armor at Tacoma.

Cain - we did build a protection against motor problems. A software error protection. The alternating F and R lights that some people have talked about. Detects a high amp spike from the motor or battery and shuts down the system to protect itself. Its with the a64 software.

Outkast87 - was it Pyscho Nitro Blast or AMS that had the monster jumps that were braking some other speedo's? Oh yea, and ROAR Nats with that big jump to the flat bottom landing.

hmm, for the person stating he had two ESCs fail you mentioned that a sensor issue could be the culprit, is that not addressed in the protect logic then? Or, by issue you mean the setup would just stop running but still work with a working motor?

Figure good to have in my bag of notes if I run into an issue.

The VTX8s have been a blast, and i have done more than my fair share of flat big jump landings unfortunately!

Psycho Nitro blast was killing other ESCs right and left. Wicked weekend a month ago took out at least one, my VTX8 was flawless. Before Viper came around I broke the case and smoked a different brand at AMS. Its happens, I never blamed the ESC in any case...it was pretty extreme conditions.

I have smoked AT LEAST 25 brushless ESCs over the years in testing, racing, and R&D for companies in the early years of brushless. I have killed em all, from $50 escs to $450 escs....every brand you can think of. I have never smoked a Viper and I probably run 6 on a regular basis, pushing the limits every time. They are as durable as they get, I wouldn't be running them if they weren't. Its a great feeling to go out of town and not have to worry about electronics anymore, hard to put a price on that.

One of several ways to spot a bad motor is rapid temp climb, hot wires, occasional cogginess, or hesitation. Its a lot easier to spot if you have several identical motors.

Yes, there is protection. It will shut esc down till you reboot. If that happens, you may want to try a different motor. I have actually have motors short out from hard landings and Lipos break, but the ESC survived it fine. Everything has its limit.

Loving that chassis protector, I will be ordering some of those today!

So it must be a really extreme issue with the motor that would take out the ESC?

Sorry guys if I am missing it, but I am just trying to understand what exactly is the issue that a motor could have that would cause the ESC to fail by bypassing the protections in the software. That way I can check my motor for those issues to make sure it doesn't happen.

Does that make sense?

Got my armor in today and got it put this should hold up nicely were ready to race tomorrow.
