Program-ability is second to none with the ProGauge. Instantaneous support is second to none with Nikos2002 and all the other sponsored stud-muffins from Viper. I've driven the RX8 Gen2 and I own the VTX8 and it is smoother than the Tekin as well. I think they are both great products but for the same price or similar, the VTX8 is hands down the better product.

Hi, I'm looking to add some timing to my setup but I am a little confused about how to do it. I have an associated B44.2 with the viper VTX10R BE and a redline gen 2 6.5T. I am currently running Profile 1. After reading through a few things my understanding is that I can either adjust timing on the endbell of the motor or adjust it on the esc.

What is the difference besides adjustment on the esc would take less time and be more exact? From viper's manual it appears that there are two different type of timing that can be done "acceleration boost" and "top speed timing." Am I right in thinking that the acceleration boost allows you to adjust the timing so it kicks in at a certain rpm and then it ends at a certain rpm? The top speed timing is exactly that, when at full throttle that is the timing the motor experiences? Lastly how would I know what a good "slew rate" would be?

If anyone can help me out and give a good starting point for the timing on my buggy I would greatly appreciate it, thank you.

That would depend on whether you need more power down low or top end speed?

You can add Top Speed Timing just on the strait yes. It requires these 4 settings to do so (with explanations on each)

Start RPM & Finish RPM - These two settings are associated with the "Acceleration Boost" part of the timing system, but the reason we need them is that they (most particularly the Finish RPM) control when the Top Speed Timing starts coming in

Basically, you have to set the Finish RPM at a RPM level that you want the TST to start engaging. This will vary on the motor you are using, gearing, etc..... so you are going to have to test to get what you want. Lower turn (higher RPM) motors will need higher settings. If it is set too low, you can over time the motor too soon, and really cause some heat issues real fast

Max Advance Timing - This is how much total timing the ESC will eventually add. Start low with this number (like 3 or 5 degrees) and test.

Slew Rate - This can be set from 1 to 10, with 1 being conservative and 10 being most aggressive. The higher the setting, the faster it adds timing. This will be hard to feel with low Max Adv Settings when comparing a "2" to "8", but the safe side here is to start low.

Now, with any time you start adding timing, one needs to consider gearing down. Or at least start by gearing down some and getting a feel for how it all works. Remember, the biggest killer of motors is too much timing, especially at low RPMS, so START CONSERVATIVELY and TEST

I would be extremely careful about adding boost or timing to a 6.5 motor in a 4wd buggy. The best drivers in the world do not do that, quite honestly, it will give you more trouble than help you.

Stay low, only ever use 1 or 2, our system will add so much timing "power" anything over 2 just adds heat and wont help you get any benefit on track.

Understand that working on a set up for timing and boost takes some practice and takes watching the temps you get as you run. Its very easy to burn out a motor if you don't do it properly. Majority of motor failures we see are from overheating. Most are from trying to run boost.

I am looking to try a 1/8 ESC for 4x4 SCT, debating right now between the viper and the tekin.

Based on the specs that Tekin has, the datalogging isn't something I need persay.

However, I would like to know if there will be a software update in the future to allow the Viper to go to 7.4V on the BEC or is it limited to just 7V.

Is the BEC on the viper stronger than the Tekin?

With that EZ link you can buy with the VTX8, does that allow you to update your software?

it has been stated by other manufacturers who use a hybrid start and drive of sensored start then sensorless drive that there setups run cooler because of this. Is this true? If so, how much a temp difference is being seen?

For people who have had issues with the product, how quick was the turn around time and how easy was working with customer service, especially towards the end of the 1 year warranty period?

Will there be a 4 Pole 540 and 550 motor option from Viper for 1/10 4x4 SCT?

Any issues using Tekin or Hobbywing 4 Pole 550 sized motors on 2S with the VTX8 or Tekin's 1/8 motors on 4S?

the VTX8 will go to 8 volts on the BEC, its just not advertised that way. I'm running mine at 7.4. I'm also running a Tekin 2050kv on 4S, and it rips. I had an issue with my ESC, and sent it in for repair. I had a new one in hand in about 10 days. No hassles, no issues. great customer support. The EZ Link does allow you to upgrade software. I would recommend getting the progauge as well as it allows very fast trackside adjustments.

what is the warranty period on the VTX8? I have heard anything from 12 months like there other ESCs to looking in the manual seeing 6 months.

Whats the difference between the EZlink and progauge?
