I can't remember if you mentioned it or not...what motor temp cut off are you running at? If you were at 136° you can add 50-60° onto that for the internal rotor temp which is what you set the threshold to. I found that out too. Adjusted it to 220° and haven't had an issue with it yet. Your motor temp seems kinda high after 3 minutes too. I was a bit undergeared but I finished my 7 minute main with my B4.1 with an 8.5 T at 113°. Ambient temp here was only about 78° though.
Yea 136 seemed kinda hot to me too. I'm running 77/28 gearing which is the lowest that will work per the HPI blitz manual without going up to 83tooth spur. I overheat everything in my backyard not sure why..its really loose dirt and all my vehicles overheat back there, doesn't seem to matter what gearing...so it probably won't get so hot at the track. The HPI manual recommends 77/28 as a starting for 17.5 turn motors. and shows 28-34 or something as pinions to use. Can't drop the pinion from 28 without going up to a 83t spur |
i am running my XXX-SCT with the viper vtx10r and vst17.5 motor
i am at 15 deg. on the can, 3000 boost start, 12500 boost finish, 36 deg. 17 deg./1000 rpm and 38 deg top speed timing. no temp issues here. im running 21/84 but i could go up to 22/84. i just put the tlr tuning kit in my truck, which brings the final drive from gear diff 2.19:1 to the ball diff 2.43:1 trans ktm dirtface, i would try turning bach timing on the motor to 15 or 20, if you haven't already. |
Any word on the 1/8 Scale ESC and Motor??? Big races coming up soon in Sept. I've been holding out on a system in hopes that all my 4 vehicles could be Viper powered. Right now Mod 2WD SCT, Mod 4X4 SCT, and 2wd 1/10 Buggy. Just need a system for the E-Scale!!!

Why do you think it glitches with the vtx10r? is this a known issue?
It doesn't glitch at all with my viper copperhead. I don't buy random powercaps/glitch busters...if it needs that I'll get a ESC that works correctly and sell this one. If you want everything to be exactly the same, 100% compatible without any effort, Traxxas makes a FINE line of beginner gear. :ha: |
Nik, I never knocked the line. Just said that it is a known issue that you guys are working on.
Netfryer, it's not just Savox servo's. It may come up with the Savox more often but it's not limited to them by any means.I have seen in with KO, Hitech, and Futaba servo's as well. Hopefully the black editions will all but solve these issue's. I want to see these things fly. They are a great ESC. We just can't seem to give them away in our area right now. When I had them work for me, they were fast as hell. |
KTM - use the progauge and check what the motor temp cut off is set at. That can cause a motor to shut off if too low. Its a measurement of the inside of the motor - not the outside like we do with a temp gun. Something to check. because we were racing in 90+ degree heat geared 75-28 for 5-7 (with warm up laps). When racing - you can disable the setting and rely on the your own measurements - its a drivers choice. Only time I temped my motor all weekend it was at 161 after 1st round of qualifying.

Lol @ Traxxas comment. Well I have a few things to test tonight I'll report back. ( first going to try HPI Radio/RX, then HPI Servo, may also try no servo at all ...thinking back it seems like it reboots itself when going from fullspeed to full brakes as it reboot itself every time I was pulling the truck into my driveway and slowing down yesterday, never had it reboot out in the middle of the street on me )

Smyka laid some more knowledge on me --- we actually had 2 complete Viper Copperhead systems in the 4wd Modified SC A Main, plus another driver just using our VX4 Copperhead motor.
So 4 of the top 11 4wd Modified SC runners at the SC Nationals were running Viper Copperhead systems. Nice:tire::tire::tire::tire: 4wd Modified - based on qualifying Mark Smyka - 5th - Copperhead/R45 Zac - 6th --using Mark's spare R45 motor (sorry didn't get last name) Joe - 10th using Copperhead system (sorry didn't get last name) Mike Aliberti - 11th - Copperhead/R51 |
Is there a temp cut off for the copperhead system? I know where to find it on the progauge for my vtx10 and 10r but do not see it when i plug it into the copperhead. I had it cut off twice on be during a race because of thermal. It wasn't super hot, but the esc and motor were both on the warm side. (in a Losi SCTE)

With Copperhead, the longer your races are (total time running) and how hard you drive on the throttle can effect the heat. Yes turning timing or punch down a little (or both down a little) can effect how heat builds up. There is a big difference between a driver who uses the throttle "correctly", by using the trigger to increase throttle as you accelerate, as opposed to someone who just mashes full throttle and actual speed as to catch up. Its all part of that big jig saw puzzle we put together with our set ups.

I have a VTX10 with a 10.5 in my buggy but the motor will not turn. Things I have checked.
Known good sensor wire Reflowed all joints Different motor Recalibrated esc The lights where the pro gauge plugs in light up correct with throttle and brake. Thanks for any help Rusty. |
Well now I can't reproduce the ESC Rebooting issue :(.
Guess i'll take a couple servos and an extra radio to the track this weekend and see if I can figure it out there. |
