Went down a bit of a rabbit hole on this, but it appears the receivers might not be tolerant/resistant to either electrical disturbances or faults.

I'm getting the runaways on hard throttle pulls on my car. If I turn down the punch level in the ESC the runaways seem to stop (and also makes the car less fun to drive, it's a basher so more power = more fun). I'm guessing the issue is either BEC blackouts or brownouts from the voltage drop on hard throttle pulls.

To test the ER5C-i's resilience against electrical faults, I wired up a momentary push button that shorts out the positive and negative pins on the receiver. Sometimes the throttle cuts out safely like it should when the pins are shorted. Sometimes the throttle doesn't' cut out. Sometimes the car goes into a runaway state even if there was NO throttle input to begin with! This last part is the most concerning to me - an errant throttle signal is coming from NOWHERE. For comparison to make sure I'm not holding the MT12 to an unfair standard I did this same test on the stock radio that came with the car and every single time it cut throttle out immediately and never put the car into a runaway state.

The ELRS devs on github seem to be entirely uninterested or unworried by this behavior which for me makes me second guess if I want to own this radio. I've used this on my ebuggy a few times - what if all it takes is one bad chassis slap to send my car running away at full speed?

What do you guys think? Am I being unreasonable?

I think you're lucky your BEC still works at all after intentionally shorting the pins.

Put a glitch buster cap on the receiver and see if it still happens.

Or they're assuming it's a hardware issue that can't be fixed with software.

hi guys

I have been searching for an answer to my issue and came across this forum.
I have bound a Turnigy GT5 Rx with gyro and it has the gyro on all the time and limits the steering to one side of center.
none of the other channels have any effect to adjust or turn off the gyro. any thoughts on this?

ELRS version +1... Great radio!

I'm not sure anyone has figured this out, what I see is people using channel 4 or 5 for steering instead of channel 1. This video explains, skip to around 7 min mark for the quick rundown.

I have not had a runaway since updating mine. I have had one issue last week racing where I kept losing power. "Telemetry lost" and car starts coasting, then a few seconds later it reconnects. I just pulled off track at that point. Sucked because I was having a really good race. I'm not sure if this is a tx/Rx issue or something else yet. Happened with different batteries so I'm going to go through the system starting from the battery connector.

Running a justock 13.5 and xr10 g3, I don't think I'd be having brown outs but I am using a cheap $25 injora servo that I have my eye on as a possible culprit.

Anyone have a good guide on update receiver? I've done it before but now I keep getting a "build error" when I try to update. I thought I followed the same steps as before, but it's not working.

RC10Nick 09-09-2024 03:28 PM

For some reason I would get a lot of build errors when using the configurator. Sometimes it would just fail, sometimes it would work. I found the most reliable method was building the firmware and saving it locally. Then I had to email the file to myself so I could download it on my phone, then I would use the rx's webUI to update the firmware. Never had any issues doing it that way.

Of course, it's completely bonkers how convoluted the process is. On paper a wifi hotspot sounds like a cool idea, but in practice I find it's far too finicky - constantly searching for wifi networks, disabling my wireless data on my phone or else I can't bring up the webUI, realizing if I set up my device to connect to my home network it no longer creates it's own wifi hotspot so I can't change settings from my phone. The entire user experience of this radio is confusion and frustration topped off with barely any official documentation and loads of unofficial youtube videos you have to trawl through to find info the particular issue you've having. I came into this radio really wanting to like it, but at this point I miss my NB4 and I've started telling people to stay away when I get asked about it at the track.

If you truly have a goal with this open TX and have the knowledge of how to program it then go ahead. If you are not into it you probably end up as a simple user.

I also was asked by a friend if this transmitter was something for him with only racing cars. I advised him to get something else.

have ypou tried an external BEC to see if it stops?

Absolutely love this radio, love EdgeTx, love ExpressLRS. It's still early days with the hardware (I want an MT16-series!), EdgeTx surface support (their roadmap shows they are active and have lots of cool features planned), and ExpressLRS (PWM hardware and the way it works is still a bit quirky). But even in this early-days phase, it's mature enough to basically make everything else irrelevant. A few months ago, I was trying to get back into the hobby and wanted to upgrade from my JR XS3-Pro FM radio/receivers and was about to buy a Sanwa M17 or Futaba 10PX. Luckily, a friend who was into FPVs clued me into the existence of the MT12 and when I learned of EdgeTx and ExpressLRS, it was an instant buy. I've spent maybe like a hundred-plus hours programming this thing and I'm still not done. Can't wait for Companion to support MT12!

Kevin Talbot tried the MT12 on his last video and must have gotten a trash one. He wrecked it.

Do you drive at all?

LOL... In my experience, >80% of the R/C hobby is not actually driving...

What was wrong with it? Which video was this?
