I agree with you there Ed. Just giving out some information here from what I've experienced. At first I had my engine with 0.3 mm shim. I noticed that it didn't have punch in the 1st speed but when 2nd speed kicks in, it had loads of power. It was like an off on tap ! I measured my head clearance with the 0.3 mm shim and it was 0.8 mm !

So I took out the 0.3 mm shim and ran it as is. With 0.5 mm head clearance (approx 0.02"), I had to richen the low end a little (about 1 full turn) but power was everywhere ! Engine had a stable idle and it did not overheat. Top end was also excellent.

But then again, doing that gave problems to my conrod. Found that out because the engine felt sluggish after a few tanks. I thought my main bearing was a gonna but it turned out that the conrod bushing was already giving a lot more play than it should. It's the same conrod I used for breaking in and I guess after about 1 gallon or so, it's time to change the conrod. More so after experiencing more compression...
Me bad, never measure. with 25%, i just start with 0.3mm shim. Then read the plug after running in. I have different BRB shim with 0.3mm to 0.5mm on the same race day, everything else equal.
D, when next time you check conrod , check both end. Something the pin wear out too.

Ed, I'm using the NovaMax crankcase. I found the same too with the Novarossi RR12L5 crankcase. I'll take a look at the Novarossi NSR12S5 crankcase tonight if it's the same.

Default BRB set

Hi Guys,

What alot of replies about the head clearance !!!!! Thank guys

Initial D......please let me know yours finding with the NSR 5 ports crankcase.

Funny thing with 0.8 mm (that what i have been running intially, coz i was too lazy to check in the first place !!) The acceleration and mid end was ballistic...top end was ok ( still quicker than a rody 3 ports !!)......If i shim it to 0.4mm, by theory, there should be more compression hence more power !!!. Anyone can tell me what i should be expecting in the powerband, i.e more bottom , mid or top ?

Ed, willl you be doing a version for the new mega picco ( whatever they call it!!!)....mark was running one,, and the accelleration was quicker than mine !!! I ran with him last weekend !!!

Thanks

philip

Hi Phillip.
Yes we have made already P/S sets for Picco based engines and they are in testing process now. I don't know yet when it will be available, but untill we tested completely for power, durability and reliability we are not going to realise it. Also Picco engines are not realy popular and till they pick up market, I don't see reason to make stes for them. Let's see-time will show.
About Mark's engine was quicker on acceleration-if you were running with 0.8mm head clearance it is diffcult to have quick acceleration. Change clearance to 0.3-0.4 and try-I am sure you will see big difference. Last weekend we had Toys for Tots race and there were lot of big names-Ofna team, Mugen team, couple Kyosho guys, RD logics etc, but nothing even come close to the performance of REX RER with BRB on MTX3 (not JP. not Picco, not REX TUNED). Actualy it was open race, so any engine was allowed to use-3 ports, 5 ports, no carb restriction-everything went.

Default Top Gun 777

Hi Ed,

TQ by a lap last weekend at the club meeting !!! DId not make the final as during warm up, my throttle servo locked at full chat !!!! Smashed into the concrete marker !!! Wrecked the front end, chassis was Z shaped, carbon top plate shattered , tit suspension pins bent, steering rods snapped, fuel tank leaking,, con rod snapped at big end !!!! Funny thing was that the nova rossi piston and Ed`s BEB sleeve was not stratched at all!!! The front wheels and uprights are ok !!!

The brb sleeve and mcp piston worked ok, shimmed from 0.8 to 0.5mm ( cannot get any lower !!!)....engine was very fast. JP outlaw, nova rossi 7 ports were not even on par with me !!

A big repair bill for me, guess it gonna be over $180 ...probably will order a new kit from rcmushroom!!!

Ed, you got PM

p.s merry xmas and a happy new year to all out there

I got combat control line airmodel and will teach my son to fly it-should be fun, just afraid it will be too fast for him-any crash and everything goes to trash can.

I would like to see that too even it will cost for me $$$$$$$$$$, I still want to see it.
Later I will try FAI speed control line too-that one is even more fun and costs a lot of more.
