I must say that Mr. Bridges customer service is second to none. I ordered the Race prep and had an issue with the crank being to small which was strange, so I called him about it. Without any hesitation, I was sent out a new one. He was truly sincere about the mishap. I understand these things happen sometimes and was not very worried about it, but he shipped it out right away. Awesome. Thank you for all of your help Mr. Bridges. And your Japanese is very good. Now to get this baby on the track as soon as it stops snowing.:flaming:

I was able to run my first race with the JS engines this last weekend both of them ran great! I ran both with P4 plugs and 7.0mm stack and EB mods 30% fuel. The buggy engine fully broke in in the 4th round of qualifying so with the mileage I was getting before I was really stoked to see what was in store for the main, unfortunately I had a front drive line failure about 7 min in to the race. My truggy engine ran great through the quals tons of power and great fuel mileage. I had a 20 min main to run with it and the plan was to pit once, and at pit time I was told I still had about 1/4 of a tank left :D, but then the engine fully broke in at about the 13 min mark and the next time I crashed I flames out so I had my pit guy put a quick tune up on it and when I went back out wow it really started to scream!!! I am very impressed with the power and the mileage of these engines and am really looking forward to the rest of the season running the JS race prep engines drinking EB mods fuel!!!

Mine ran stellar too Erik... In fact all I did to it was try to take power out all weekend  seriously it never tempd over 220 and it was all I could handle. We pitted 9-10mins in the main and still had fuel to spare. Day to day I checked the tune before heats and it was rock solid. Still on the same plug after 2 gallons. Im guessing if we leaned it out we could of went 12mins without a problem. Thanks Ed

Help on mileage
Any suggestions on getting some more mileage out of my JS full mod. I'm using a 6.5 restrictor, 9901SS, 41021 pipe, OS p5. Ambient temp 60-70s. Engine temp was 210, but I stop checking after my first 5 or 6 tanks, so I don't know where it temps now. I just know it idles well, drops to idle well after a throttle pull, and it feels very strong on the track. I did some testing a small medium grip track and was able to just get 10mins with my current setup. I was able to get just 10mins on a large high speed track also, but I was holding back to make my pit window. (20 min race)
In comparision, I was getting 12+ mins on a different motor I've run for years in the same buggy. The JS full mod is very smooth, and it spools up faster than my previous motor. It really has more power than I need on the bottom and everywhere else for that matter. The only problem is my mileage has suffered. I have the idle gap set 1 1/4 turn from closed and set the low end needle with that idle gap. Does this hold true for a smaller restrictor also? If you have any ideas please let me know. There's large race coming up next week, and I'd like to make 11.5min pits. I was able to do that last year, but this year I may have to settle with an extra pit stop. |

Im running a 6mm restrictor and a steel flywheel along with one of the softest clutch set-ups you can put on the losi to smooth everything out which ultimately increases mileage as well, Don't forgot not only are you running a different engine then last year but also a different car and that can also play a roll in fuel mileage. I know you know the drill but the smoother the drive train the better mileage is and clutch is a major part too. I believe a 3 shoe clutch gets worse mileage then a 4 shoe and I know of at least one other person who switched cars as well and saw a drop in mileage so has went to a 4 shoe to help get that mileage back. I'm not sure if the JQ has a 3 or 4 shoe but could be something to look into. |
I agree with everyone... I use the stock HB clutch in my D8 and have been getting 10-11mins pretty consistently at 200' 7mm venturi, P4, dyn 086, sidewinder purple stuff. I could eaily lean it out and get alot better mileage, but not sure if I can drive the power
I have a werks clutch Ive used and run the .9 springs on that. |
It was a good tiime at motorama an a bonus too see ED and all of those .23 ripping down the straight . Talk about a beast of a mill WOW
Can't wait till my mills home Thanks ED. |
thanks for the feedback guys. based on everyones comments I'm going to guess it's one of two things. It's my combo of pipe/head/plug or it's my tune.
I've seen Chris' mileage on his race prep and I was amazed. That's what finally convinced me to try a JS. I already have a soft 4 shoe ascendancy steel clutch, and my drivetrain feels free. An A/B motor swap was 2 extra minutes on another motor I have with the same chassis. That's the extra time I'm looking for. So I'll lean the tune somemore and maybe try Chris' pipe/6mm restrictor/plug combo. |
thats pretty much same setup im using tony and im getting about 10-11mins except for this past weekend at motorama i was probubly getting 9 but was a little rich and didn't want to touch it.

JS .21
if you work on your setup and get it really dialed in FOR YOU, then 10 min pits are made easily, 11.30 pits is really pushing it i think but maybe possible for some ppl on some days.

If anyone can get 11:30 Ernest can lol he is smooth and precise on the throttle and the complete opposite of my driving lol:lol: I was getting about 10:40 on the layout that was at the pit Ernest and that was at 200-210, maybe the 53 is a better fit then the 01 I know the 53 is the power pipe so maybe the 01 is just choking the engine too much and hindering mileage? just a theory and something to try!:tire::tire: |

Stock ring/crown with clutch/spur 13/46 on small track 14/46 on big tracks? |

If it's not my pipe combo, than I think I just need to learn to tune this better. Honestly I haven't gotten to the point were I just keep leaning until I see/feel a performance loss and back it off and fine tune from there. The motor runs very strong already, so I stopped at that point. I don't think I have that 99% tune yet. |

Good points. I do have areas I can work on that I'll try and address before Wednesday. New motor, new car, and little time to get everything dialed in. My backup plan is settle for 9:15-9:30 pits.

That sucks Will.... maybe cut a sliver of heatshrink a couple mm's wide to go behind the oring and shrink it in place to push alittle on the oring? I did this at a race years ago on a kyosho tank that was leaking and it saved my butt.
Luckily my tanks have been good on my HB's.... maybe you got old stock thats sat around forever? |
after reading through this thread i just had to get one of these engines they sound like awesome bang for buck and no one else at the track down here races one just alpha's and go's and the odd o.s which as we all know are nothing special for their trendy price tag, just made order should have my JS 521R on friday just in time for the weekend break in :) whats a good method you guys found with breaking this engine in? just the typical heat cycle method?

I just bought a race prepped engine from Amain. I borrowed one with 4+ gallons on it last week for my buggy and I was thoroughly impressed with it. I ran it with a Reedy 2039 pipe/header combo and after the first qualifier, I had to go up one tooth on my clutch bell to tame down the low end a little more. I like my low end power to be more linear and since I'm going to run this engine at the Psycho Nitro race and I was wondering if I should stay with the 2039, go to the 086 pipe or try a Nova 9901 pipe? (I have a heavy trigger finger resulting from my "pin it to win it" motocross days in the past) Any suggestions to help me get up to speed and used to this engine would definitely be appreciated since the Psycho Nitro race is only 2 weeks away!
Thanks! |
With my raceprep I idled one tank and went easy for a couple tanks... then let er rip. After 2 gallons I still cant turn it over by hand in the car :D
I just picked up a 2039 to try, as well a a dyn 053. Seems most are using the 053 but watched a couple run with 2035's and figured the 2039 would be similar but smoother down low. You should be fine either way, its probably a pretty small difference. |
contact ed?

Advice
I guys, I have just pulled down and put back my JS and for some reason the carb is moving slightly in the sleeve. I have tightened the screw as much as I can but it still moves. What have I done?
Cheers. |

I removed the screw and took the carb right out. It's just now when I have put it back that it moves slightly in the sleeve. Have I screwed it too tight previously?

Cheers. This isn't caused from over tightening the clinch, but instead from "twisting" the carb to "break" the clinch after loosening the clinch screw. Anytime you clinch the carburetor down it is best to completely remove the clinch bolt and the clinch assembly when needing to remove the carburetor. If you do it this way, the carburetor will pull straight out effortlessly and last a long time. |
EBMods and JS Racing had an excellent showing at Motorama, all of the JS engines I tuned Saturday were ripping, and I seen a few others on the track that sounded really good. Almost every heat had JS engines in them, sometimes 3 or more :)
I can't wait for the outdoor season :) |
was nice to meet you ed and put a face to a name at motoroma i went looking for you so we talk after and could not find you. i will give you a call in a few days let you get some health back i am pretty sick to
