thanks everyone for your advise.
i will do more testing this coming weekend ! :D

OS plugs will fit the abc engine (mine is a 3port). i use the a5.. have not tried anything else yet but will be replacing my plug soon..

Darkseid 12-29-2003 01:12 PM

well my OS A5 plug just drops right into the plug hole on my 12TRP. The hole seems to big for the plug.

Darkseid 12-29-2003 01:29 PM

Yeah, I just confirmed it, I pulled the plug button on my new (blue head) 12TRP and the plug hole is simply too big for OS plugs. I'm not sure how you guys manage to use them, but no luck here for me.

Looks like the choices still remain:

Nova Rossi
Sirio

I'll probably just go with the Nova Rossi since TowerHobbies has them instock.

Again, thanks to everyone for all the input.

Glow plugs

I have no expirience with OS plugs, but got some very good results from O'Donnell glow plugs. We tested on control line combat and results just more then perfect. Ob that engines we use verry high compression ratio and no one plug blew up even using during "carusel" type of competitions ( 10 teams within 30 minuts non stop fight).

Darkseid 12-29-2003 01:37 PM

Never seen anyone using O'Donnel plugs before.

But heck, I guess you learn something new everyday. I thought for sure that all glow plug threads were the same size. But the plug hole on this new engine of mine is quite a bit bigger than the OS plug.

Darkseid 12-29-2003 02:14 PM

Okay, now I'm really confused???

I just checked the specs of the NovaRossi plugs on TowerHobbies. The listing there says that the plugs have a thread size of 1/4". This is the same size as the threads on the OS plug. The only difference, I believe, is how long the threads are(OS plugs are a little shorter).

So if the OS A5 plug I have is too narrow for my plug button, how will the NovaRossi plug fit?

Am I missing something here? I'm starting to think that the plug button that came with my "legal" engine is actually a turbo button. The same thing happened to a friend of mine who tried to order a "legal" Sirio about a year ago.

Heres the specs that I measured from it.

threads-7mm~a little wider than 1/4"
-then the button tapers down to a 5mm opening at the bottom. This seems to me that it is a turbo button, am I wrong???

And if so, how the heck will I get a legal button for it!?!

Sorry for all the plug questions, but this is really confusing me...:weird:

Hey Darkseid

The best way to check visually if you have a standard or turbo button is to do the following

Remove the plug from the engine, then remove the button from the engine. Look straight down where the top of the plug would normally be, if the hole is clear and threaded all the way to the end it's a standard button.

If you look down and see the thread end then a taper on the button it's a turbo plug.

Another way to check is to measure the width of the thread in the button if it's the same on either side of the button it's a standard, if it's bigger on the plug side than the piston side, then it's a turbo button.

Sounds like you have a turbo though from what you say.

Then I definitely have a turbo button. Thats really not a big deal since a standard button only runs like $9.81 at TowerHobbies and I wouldn't mind having both.

My big concern is finding out if this is actually a legal 3 port engine and not an illegal 5 port.

How can I find that out?

The only physical way, is by taking the sleeve out of the engine and counting the number of ports it has. 3 transfers plus 1 exhaust is a legal engine. 4 transfers and 1 exhaust it is illegal. 3 transfer and 3 exhaust it is illegal.
As for glow plugs choose the right one according to a chart i printed sowher on this post regarding a .18 Sirio, the .12 use the same. The chart is for standard and turbo heads.

Good luck

Well I found out that it was in fact a illegal 5 port turbo engine. I got in contact with the shop I ordered from and they're going to get me correct engine out to me in a few days.

I also told them to feel free to look inside the Sirio box and take a look at the plug hole. A quick check to make sure its a standard plug port will make sure that I don't have turbo engine!;)

Should have my new.........new engine in a few days.

Wow! a five porter for the price of Three, and you returned it?:weird: Well, a 5-porter is alright if your local track permits it, have to check with the rules there.

But it is indeed illegal for Ifmar or any associated bodies sanction races until they change the rules on that.:)

Anyway, Enjoy your new 3 port Sirio, this is one fast engine too..................:)

I have a SIRIO S12 EVO2, and as with all my previous engines I've used this tip with success. Every engine and carb is a whole new story.

Arrgghhh the frustration :)

Hi People..

I have some problems with my sirio .12. It was stopping randomly and also leaning out while on the track. Leaning out has been fixed by using a novarossi carb but its still stopping randomly.

Today after not being able to fix the problem (sometimes it goes 3mins, othertimes 7mins etc) I did some dohnuts/powerslides and noticed it stopped straight away after getting off the throttle. I restarted engine and repeated the dohnuts/power slides got off throttle and engine stopped again straight away so it seems if engine is under a lot of load while throttle is open its (no idea - you got a theory?) doing something anyway. But I can do a high speed WOT and it does not stop :weird: :weird:

Too much/not enough pressure line? aggh going crazy lol..

So what dumb thing am I doing wrong ? :) (Man my .21's are soo much easier!!! lol)

Well I'm one of the people who run the local track. So I'm well up on the rules! We would allow an engine like that, but we really don't encourage them. Its really too much for our track, which is big, but not HUGE. Besides, it wouldn't really look right discouraging others from getting illegal engines while I run one myself.:sneaky:

Also, we have another local track that last year managed to secure a Roar regional race. I didn't get to attend last year because I was out of town AND low on funds! If they get it again this year, I may actually compete, so I want a legal engine in my car when the time comes.
