do you have to keep the same spread between first and second on the pinions and spures?

Yes, sometimes you can get away with 1 tooth, but I recommend keeping the same split.

I used to think and say that as well. I learned something at this last race. The first gear spurs are the same size. Same with the second gear spurs. Measure them. There is a very slight difference in manufacturing from gear to gear, but other than that, they are the same size.

its the same way on the r40..
but like everything else, there is a limit to what you can get away with.
is there a chart showing stock pinions compared to the .8's?

I am not sure what you mean by a chart showing stock pinions vs. the .8's. You have to use .8 spurs with .8 pinions.

looking for pinions I've come across the "stock" pinions, the .8 pinions and what some places referr to as the "fine" tooth pinions.. I'm thinking the "fine" pinions are the .8's....

The MTX4 also comes with .8 pinions/spurs.

The diameter isn't going to be the same, but if you were using a 20t normal pinion and a 60t normal spur the gear ratio is the same as if you are using a 20t .8 pinion with a 60t .8 spur.
What happens is when changing from the old setup to the .8 setup is you will be running more teeth on the .8 stuff. You will use more teeth on the pinion and the spur.

pinions: 21/27 ( 6 tooth difference )
spurs: 53/59 ( 6 tooth difference )
In my car, I replace the pinions with 22/29 ( 7 tooth , but it's okay.... race tested ). However, it would be peace of mind if I could get 22/28 pinion gears as grandgixxer said.

21/25
54/58
I will end up buying more, but these pinions are spendy...
anyone running the white springs?
I got used to driving an almost twitchy car and the mtx-3 feels too planted in the rear and not enough steering...
