I am wondering what you all are running for shims in the rear ring and pinion. Stock it has 2 on the left and 2 on the right. After the gears break in does anyone move 3 on the left and 1 on the right or run them all on the left to move the ring gear closer to the pinion?

i stripped my ring and pion last week and bought a new ring and pion and was told to buy a case too because where the inserst go in the case may be worn.. so i replaced it and put 3 shims on the left and one on the right and had NO problems at all at the track this past sunday

Thanks for the fast response. The case is fairly new.

Frank L 08-18-2009 02:12 PM

Anyone shim the front at all?

mattwoodcraft 08-18-2009 02:16 PM

i have been looking at my diffs and i have just been shimming them so they continue to spin freely with a small amount of back lash

cool...and ive never seen or heard any probs with the front

mattwoodcraft 08-18-2009 02:23 PM

i think in alloy bearing inserts a must up grade they just seem to work better and hold your diff alot more square less chance of slop due to plastic wear ect

Frank L 08-18-2009 02:34 PM

I agree the alum diff supports are a must. I like them.

I have stripped out a front ring and pinion in this truck though. I replaced the rear at the same time just to make sure. Is anyones truck making a metal noise while accelerating? It sounds like ring and pinion but I am not sure. I have heard it on other 2.0's as well.

I think I'm going to try my old 1.0 rear end and see what happens.

 heres how its done

These are the new ones i made out of an old 8T body. i only made them because the 8T ones were a little short for my liking. they did work fine but i had an old body that i could cut up to make some longer ones

you'll see here how you can stack the nuts so that you dont have to cut down the arm. do them up super tight as they do occasionally come undone. you also have to use a longer screw for the sway bar

so it Can be done

I use the aluminum ones, and feel they are a great upgrade. Problem is that even with the aluminum inserts and shimmed perfectly, the R&P still go. I just got the parts yesterday and will hopefully be getting them shipped to Mark tomorrow. You can tell by looking at the pinions side by side, that the Xray pinion is MUCH stronger. I looked at my worn losi R&P, and can see where the failure is. It's almost like the losi pinion doesn't properly fit the ring gear. Like it only contacts a small part of the ring. Anyway I am hoping the Xray mod will solve all issues. I will keep you guys informed.

Oh, BTW you CAN shim the front diff.
