But at the same time CIVIC was running Associated coppers I think, which are stiffer than the stiffest Tamiya springs, and he was TQ.
So it may just be about driving style.

Well, heres a copy of my latest setup for carpet/foam. This setup should work really well with 19 or stock. You may notice the neg. 3 deg. camber...believe me, it seems like a lot, but this car needs that much to not cone the tires, and it doesn't hinder the setup at all. Let me know if you guys have ???s

The short yellow springs are part #53631, "On Road Short Spring Set", and were included in some kits - my TA04-R Tuned chassis kit being one example.
