work : i think it would be better if you get the new carbon reinforced chassis (with battery slots) for your TA04 BE. it would be a little bit heavier but the handling will improve.
just got myself a TA04 BE with carbon graphite upper and lower decks. i'm planning to change the lower deck into a carbon reinforced one.
see you soon dude! practice tayo one of these days. sayang naman TA04 mo.
lem2 : how are you dude? regards

TA04 Gearing
Hi guys,
I recently went to the HQ track in Aliso Viejo. I don't know how many of you go there, but I was having a difficult time with my gearing of the car. I am running the stock set-up in the car with a Reedy MVP stock motor and 128:37 gearing. My motor was extremely hot. I checked the brushes and the comm, but everything was okay. I didn't see any binding anywhere and the drive train seems fine. Do you guys have any suggestions as to how I may gear my car? Thanks in advance.

Denso : try running 120:37. i think using 128:37 is under-geared for your stock MVP motor. hope this helps.

I've run at the Tamiya track before. Badboy is correct, you are undergeared for that motor. At the last TCS race there, I geared it at 31/96 with 48 pitch gears. If you stick with your 128 tooth spur, that translates to a 41 tooth pinion.

So, Denso had his car geared at 128/37, which equals 7.37:1
You've suggested 120/37, which equals 6.91:1
But you say 7.4:1 is "too low" (I'm assuming numerically), but you've also recommended an ever lower ratio. Oh I see, you meant too low as in "you're in too low of a gear (cars)" right?
Since we're on the subject, and this has been nagging me for a while, why do low-turn, high-rpm, mod-motors require that you use a numerically higher gear ratio (or, downshift, ie. need a lower gear, gear it down)
Thanks

Racers have had luck running their MVP's with gear ratios from 6.0 all the way up to 10.0, as the motor wears in and the comm is cut the RPM's increase and the torque moves slightly up the RPM band. I know last weekend I ran my MVP in my Mission with a FDR of 9.11 and quite short foams, the rollout was 21mm!!!! and the car was as fast or faster than any other stock car on the track.....

Thanks to all who replied! When I started out that day I had the car geared with a 120:38 ratio and that was hot. In order to run the motor cooler, I switched to the 128:37 ratio and it still ran hot. It's a brand new motor and therefore never been properly broken in. Now, like I said the motor was extremely hot. I mean to the point where you couldn't even touch it for one second. I'm afraid to gear that thing up to a 41 tooth pinion. You know, the stock setting in the instructions say to install the 120 spur and the pinion is set at 45. Hmmmm...makes me wonder. I thought that the gearing was too high and the motor would melt at the ratio. I will back at the track this Saturday and test some more. I'll even try my P2K2 motor and see how that thing runs.

120/45 is the ratio Tamiya recommends for their DYNA-RUN motor, If I'm not mistaken last time I ran a stock motor n my 04-R I used 120-37 with a P2K2, and you should go down about 2-4 teeth for an MVP, so I would try and start at 120/34 and then work from there.

Denso,
One thing to add: the MVP motor runs HOT no matter how you gear it. The only way for it to run cool is to use the brush narrowing technique recommended by Jim Greenemeyer.
Personally, I gear the MVP by speed, not by temperature. If people are blowing by you on the straight, then its time to gear up (lower gear ratio, bigger pinion, smaller spur). If your car is good on the straight, but is getting killed in the infield, then its time to gear down. My question for Denso is: how was your cars speed compared to everyone elses??
