What wrong with the rear diff the thrust bearing should cope with 80 90 plus runs before needing to be replaced.


If the diff is gritty you need to sand the groove out of the diff rings with 800 grit wet and dry until you get a shiny flat surface. Then bed it in by running it slightly loose under load for 20 sec retighten and it should be smooth a silk with the wheels on when tighten so it dosen't slip.
Over tightening a without bedding in a new groove will flatten the balls and cause that gritty feeling.
You should also run as trf boy says ceramic balls ($10 form acer)in the diff and only put smear of lube on each ball. This stop the diff slipping and attracting dirt so you don't need to over tighten it.

Also clean your hands and every thing else you are using to put the diff back together with any grit in the rebuild will make it feel rough.
And make sure the thrust bearing has being fully flushed out and dryed before relubeing.

We have to do this for a 1/12th and 2wd drive off road as a bad diff can chronicly screw up the handling making the car lose it smoothness in the corners.

I have got a 106 on mine and any bigger and it will probably be out of the bottom of the chassis.

Hey Sohlman, everything looks pretty good. At some point you should try running your droop settings the other way, (2mm in front and 4mm in the rear). Same with camber, (1.5 front and 2.0 rear). This works for me but could be differnet for someone else. I know Marc ran things the other way, but these changes take little time to do and won't hurt to try.

EJ is right for the droop switching...

But 2 and 4mm? That seems really high. Here in the Midwest where carpet is king I can pretty much say no one ever runs that much. I think for a foam car with that much droop it will feel lazy.

I would run 1.5 and 2.0mm if traction is decent.

That's just my opinion. Most people around this area race on carpet and I've never seen anyone run that much droop.

sohlman, I converted Marc's 4mm chassis wheelbase over the the 2.5mm wheelbase and the front inner shims would be 1mm and the rear inner shim would be 0mm. So it's a very short wheelbase. My droop when measured with the new Tamiya droop gauge and 56mm tires, comes out about 3.5mm front(under grubscrew hole) and 4mm rear(under rear hub). I also run 1.5 camber front and 2.0 camber rear.

I also found out that my corner speed got better when I added more rear toe. Today I was running my EvoIV on carpet. I got it just about dialed in finally. So I'm gonna try and convert the setup over to the MSX for testing next weekend. But anyways, I was running (in the rear) the 1X/1A block. And I had horrible corner speed. But I switched to 1X/1C and it picked up awesomely. So that might be something you can try.

Wish I had time to try EJ's setup. But I don't have all of my old style suspension parts laying around. Did you use a 3mm chassis?

Well I'm ordering me a MSX2 tuesday from Steve as well as the DJ suspension and all the X* blocks and a spool. Anyone happen to have an extra locked center pulley for the car that they are willing to sell since everyone is out of stock on them?
