Default Advice Needed

Hey folks,
Long time since I've been into RC cars, and I've just picked up an f104w wolf from the Tamiya black friday sale. This will be for parking lot fun, and something just to build and enjoy upgrading over time.

There are some upgrades I'd like to do right away, but with all the info out there (and the car being outdated) I'm having trouble sorting through it all.

I'd like to update the car to all bearings, update the motor mounts, diff, and the shock. I'd also like to get a set of foam tires for general parking lot thrashing.

Can anyone help with some part numbers, links, clues, etc as what I should buy?

The last pan car I raced was a BoLink from 1987 (or thereabouts) so yeah, I'm behind the times...

Thanks!

Steve

@Stevepss

Hey Steve, welcome back and congrats on your new addition.

Here’s a link to the hop-ups for your car from Tamiya.
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/rcp...=desc&offset=1

Below are the part numbers for the parts you called out. I didn’t see a specific bearing kit so you might check with your LHS. I think this kit only uses 9 bearings of various sizes.

Motor mount – 54166
Alum Diff – 54158
Damper/shock - 53901

Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun!

@Vyger
Thanks! Being in little RI, it would appear no such local (or remotely local) shop exists anymore. Kind of a bummer. Back in the day there were a couple shops, and even a few nice outdoor and indoor tracks.

I just wrote a length post on the bearing sets I had found, and if f104 sets would work with the f104w, and also if a venom lipo will fit, but the forum slapped me for not having enough posts to include links.

*bot slap!*

So I'll have to wait to ask those questions

On the rear wing, do I paint the flouro red, then white, then black all on the same side? Or do I paint black on one side then floro red over white on the other side?

My only concern is the fluorescent red has more of a matte finish... Or do I spray some kind of clear over it?
You can spray clear gloss over the top, but remember that the paint might not bond well and could chip off. Most people are color matching vinyl wing covering for airplanes and using it to color their wings.

I know what you mean. Seems that it is becoming harder to track things down locally. I know that I have two shops in the area, one is Traxxas focused while the other is into aircraft and trains mostly. Means most of my business has gone to online retailers sadly.
There is a local onroad and offroad track, though the F1 racing there is very very limited. Going to be some roadtrips coming up, may even end up in RI if there is some decent racing fun to be had!

Anyone tried to balance a rear F1 tire before? I have a set of rears which vibrates pretty badly and instead of throwing it out, I want to try and see if I can balance it before trashing them.

Heres how I plan to balance the tires:
  • Install new, degreased bearings on the car so the drive shaft spins with the least friction
  • Mount one wheel to one side
  • Give the wheel a spin and see which side drops to the lowest point
  • Add lead tape on the opposite side.
  • Repeat until the wheel stops at random points.

Any other advice?

Instead of the lead tape , you could use modeling clay.

Question for the guys who have run F1 on the new CRC carpet which by all accounts is high grip with excellent side bite, What compound/brand of tires did you find work best front/back and any suggestions on setup for a F104 pro platinum edition? Thanks

Default Looking to trade for F1 setup

I have an autographed Emerson Fittipaldi replica helmet I'm looking to trade for an F1 setup. Let me know if interested.

Default F104w batt?

so... the venom lipo i bought is too tight a fit. I have to take off the top deck just to put it in. Can someone give me a budget minded suggestion for one that fits better? I'm running the stock 540j with a hobbywing 1060 brushed ESC.

TIA!
