Personally I have always built TRF shocks with the 3-hole piston (no particular reason). I've got #500 oil in the front with blue springs and #450 oil in the rear with yellow springs at the moment. I don't honestly think that the exact damper build you use makes THAT much difference, but you can use thicker/thinner oils front or rear to adjust the handling balance.

Shock length is important - I use Sweep tyres (55D) and have mine at 57mm all round at the moment to get enough ride height for my local rules with a small amount of droop. The manual build with the o-ring spacer comes up at 55.5mm or so which is OK for Tamiya 60D tyres but perhaps too short for 55D.

What's the best grease to use for lubricating the tamiya rebuildable universals?

I use Mugen Super Joint Grease. It extends the life of 1/8 nitro universals, TAM universals on a mini should last forever.

I can't get hold of this grease in the UK.

The universals came with anti wear grease but it seems so thick and tacky! Will it slow the car?

I've been using standard tamiya grease but it spins off after a single 5 minute round.

If I give the anti-wear a try, how much should I use and does it go on just the pins or the ball and cup too? The instruction booklet is a little vague.

The AW grease is just fine for the job. It won't slow the car, as with any grease you cover the moving parts with it.

The other option is to run the parts with a little light oil. You might get a little more wear like that though.

I've tried the trf shock bushing in the out drive cups. They are way too thick but certainly keep the cups in place. Anyway, after one race, the transmission sounded awful when some steering lock was applied. On inspection, the universal pins had worked loose and were only held in place one side of the universal cup. The universals were built correctly, tightened to the maximum and with thread lock.

I reckon the force applied by the trf bushing was pushing on the universal assembly causing excessive vibration, working the pin loose.

Since then I have cut the trf bushing in half which gives a much looser fit but with only 1mm of play between the bone and cup.
