Hi All,
I've just been taking my car apart and I've noticed the layshaft is moving back and forth by about 3mm. This has got me really worried. Can I simply shimm it up to get rid of this slop? I'm mainly worried about the bevel gear meshing. Will this cause too much resistance in the gears or not?
Regards
Paul

I thought I saw a low profile front shock tower on-line before. If it does exist does someone have a part number for this?

Hi all,
OK i made a mistake. It's the input shaft and not the layshaft that is moving. I think 3mm was over the top. It's moving back and forth by about 1mm. I loked at the two bearings on the input shaft behind the spur gear and noticed quite alot of slop. I have always run the 3 shimms as the manual states. I have now upped this to 6 shimms. The slop has now dissappeared, but will this cause excessive resistance in the gearbox?

Heres the way to shim EVERYTHING on your car.
FEEL you car. haha sounds funny but really, learn what you car feels like before you run it. then feel what it feels like after you run it. you'll soon be able to tell when slop develops or when something just doesnt feel right.
To shim the drivetrain the thing to remember is that you want as little slop as possible but with things as free as possible first. So keep adding shims, one at a time, and moving things until you notice friction. At this point you have at least 1 too many shims. Remove a shim and see how it feels, see if it feels like there is a LITTLE bit of side play. Now try removing one more shim, see if it free's up some, but also if it develops a bunch of slop. The tradeoff here is that a little bit of free-ness isnt worth a bunch of slop.
This goes for everything really...hingepins, kingpin screws, drivetrain shimming, etc.
My money knows that Hara can pick up your car and tell you what to change to make it better, without driving it

finally got to the carpet track tonite to test my mods....everything worked! moving the batts up 1/2 an inch......adding a "spine" to the top deck all made a BIG difference in the car. the thing was almost mod raceable straight off the bench! only two changes were needed and she was right there!
my 10 month old batts couldn't compete with the top guy's 3800's, but only time and $$$ will fix that! ..my TOP stockers wasn't enough for those EPICs eigther.....but i aint NEVER SCURRED!!!
now i can "officially" retire 'ole gurl an fire up the X-ray! outdoor season will be here before you know it!

Well I managed to get rid of that slop I talked about. Got a new input shaft from work and now it's as good as new.
