I am an indoor black carpet guy mostly,
i ran the 420X carbon car this weeknd on fairly low grip asphalt in 17.5 TC
the locals are all multi- ROAR national champs, so the bar is set high

The car had amazing rear grip, almost too much , , I started at 3deg rear toes, backed it down to 2.5 deg
i ran flex mode with the rear bearing installed for the top deck
i would rather my car to understeer a bit that oversteer at those speeds
on the front of the top deck i had 2 stiffner bolts installed

the car was fun to drive, predictable , and fast, the area to work on for me, which will be track temp depending is off center of the corner rotation,
i could probally acheive this with less rear toe, and then and a screw to the motor mount if i needed to snug up the rear

I am wondering if I should pull the trigger now to upgrade from my 420, or skip this generation. Here in Germany inventory is getting low – most shops already list it as "out of stock". Will Tamiya produce more of the 420X or is a successor imminent?

interesting quest, I have been looking for a Tamiya FF04 Evo in blue, but did some measurements, and some mock ups, the next 420 will probally be true mid motor, with only a top deck change and belt lengths.. thats it minus a couple of holes drilled into the chassis for the motor mount
I am gonna make a 420XF ( my version ) for FWD racing, and i plan to hurt some feelings

I hope you're right! If I look at tamiyabase.com and the release date of the TRF touring cars in the past 10 years and the time between them I get this release cycle:
  • TRF 418 Dec 2013
  • TRF 419 Dec 2014 – 1 year
  • TRF 419X May 2016 – 1 year 5 months
  • TRF419XR Dec 2017 – 1 year 7 months
  • TRF420 Dec 2019 – 2 years
  • TRF420X May 2022 – 2 years 5 months
  • TRF??? potentially Dec 2023 – 1 year 7 months
So while a it feels a bit early considering the two most recent releases, an update still within this year would actually match Tamiya's update schedule. And it would fit the pattern of either May or December launches. Fingers crossed!

Your time line makes sense. The reason I feel a 421 is coming is that the TB Evo 8, changed to the upper wishbone type.. and the TB is where Tamiya tends to experiment and then applies it to TRF. Majority of other brands have also gone to upper wishbone, so I feel that is in the works.

It’s Tamiya however, they beat to the sound of their own drums

My TRF414 to a TRF420. Well, some parts from a TRF420. Will I buy the latest? Probably not

Is there a Tamiya part that can be used to close the gap on the front battery retainer? It's pretty huge with an ULCG pack. These are already the shorter standoffs. Needs to be TCS legal.

I use Tamiya plastic or even aluminum servo mounts to fill in the gap. I sometimes use brass weights too when using shorty packs.

This is the gap with the shorter blue posts for LCG batteries?
