Charts for Quick reference:

1) put inner bearing in hub
2) slide large shim over axle all the way up to the back of the axle
3) slide axle/bone into hub carrier
4) slide small shim onto axle through hub carrier
5) push outter bearing into hub carrier

using that i'm able to put my normal male silverback gorilla wheel nut tightening job and there's no binding. in the pictures that come with the shims (the pic socket posted) it seems like they want you to slide both shims onto the axle before sliding the axle into the hub carrier and like i said, that doesn't work.

I've traditionally done the diff screw head on the left side (driver's side), but have since switched to the Right side (passenger side) regardless of transmission type (3 gear RM vs 3 gear MM and 4 gear MM).

Kdub (Kurt Wenger, former AE designer) had this to say on the matter:

The right rear is the way the AE manuals state (or used to state). It really shouldn't matter since you go around turns both left and right.

If you go to the associated site and look up the b6, there will a link to support documents, including the b6 manual.

just wondering if the B6D.1 ball diff fits the B6D.

I have the B6.1 and the outdrives are amazing. I already went through 2 driveshafts (racing in 13.5T carpet) and the outdrives still doesn't have wear on it.

I know from experience that the B6.1 gear diff fits the B6 minus the metal spacers.

Has anyone installed a B6.1 gear box to the B6 chassis? Since the ball diff's are the same, is the bolt pattern for the gearbox itself the same. I want to upgrade the gearbox so I don't have to pull the whole back end of the car off to do diff maint. I apalogize if this question has been answered. I tried to search it and found someone with a list of everything to convert but I want to use my current B6 chassis if I can.

The bolt patterns are different, but there are gearboxes available on Shapeways that gave Associated the idea to make their new gearboxes this way.

Anyone know the weight difference between ball diff and gear diff? Looking at playing with gear diff on high bite clay and wondering if there is a big weight penalty with the gear diff with gears and fluid.

Is there a substantial difference between the B6.1D and the B5M on loose dirt? Enough that it would benefit a beginner to spend the extra money on the 6.1D?

For someone just starting out it probably doesn't matter what car you have since just keeping it on all four wheels will be the biggest challenge. Every time you crash you are going to loose at least 5-10 seconds. So if you crash a couple times a lap it doesn't really matter how fast you are going the rest of the time. Once you can put together full races with only a couple crashes the car will come into play.

The one thing I will say though is the new buggies are nicer to work on and would probably be easier to find parts for at the track if you need them. I can't imagine there being a ton of B5m's at the track anymore but there will be lots of B6d/B6.1d

So looking at a used B6D could be worth it in order to find some cost savings? Or is it just worth the extra money to upgrade to a B6.1D?

If your patient you can probably find a good used B6d. Since you already have the electrics, I would buy only a roller. Keep it under $150 because if you want to spend $300 then just buy the new buggy.

x2. They changes made between the 6 and 6.1 are subtle, especially to a newer driver or average club racer. Buy used, as long as it doesn’t look beat to hell.

What spare parts are typically good to keep on hand when run the 6D at the track? Are there any weak spots that you were finding were breaking more frequently?
