Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

This is a super easy change to make. I suggest just trying it out during practice. There is nothing like actually feeling what this change does for yourself.

Do the holes (manually) drilled for the exotek laydown in an original 3.0 chassis, match the tranny holes on the laydown-specific chassis?

You could go big and get the Makita the AE guys use. That thing is pricey

https://www.amazon.com/Makita-DF010D...s=makita+drill

There are others people use. I love the hitachi though. We can find them for about $60 over here. Come with two batteries. I can easily build a car on a single charge. Clutch setting 5 works most of the time and can obviously go lower (down to 1) and go MUCH higher (I think 21).

I have been using one for many years now. The original one I had the switch started to die and that was supposed to be upgreaded on the v2 I linked to and have not had any issues with it yet.

I use these solid pins regardless of the hex.

Just got this one myself. Amazon had a one day coupon code a few weeks ago so it was $54. Really wish I had a kit to build!

Definitely MIP driver bits

I have a Harbor Freight $10 screwdriver that I have replaced once in a few years.
No clutch on it or any other tricks, flashlight on it tho.

I just used it to build my last kit, 22 3.0 SR buggy on the same afternoon that I also raced that evening.
