What are the symptoms of a ball diff needing a rebuild?
Had an issue last time out when my buggy wouldn't run. The motor had power, but, it was acting like the tranny had a neutral position with a slight grinding sound. After about 15 seconds, the buggy was off and running again without issues for the rest of the battery ~10 more minutes. Haven't tried anything since. |

For me the symptoms of needing to tear down and re lube/inspect the diff are:
Has it been run 3 weekends? Yes - inspect/relube/rebuild if needed. |

I usually do a rebuild when it starts to feel notchy, not as smooth as when I rebuild new. usually flip the both sets of rings if haven't been done already, new balls all around or at least the bigger diff balls if I am running the smaller ceramic ones.

I'd never get to run my car if I rebuilt the diff every time it felt notchy. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but no matter what I do my diff is only smooth after a complete rebuild, I can never seem to get all the grit out of it.
big thing for me at least was going ceramics in the smaller thrust balls. I tried all ceramics but getting it to set as I wanted was a pain. Considering though the quality of the AE stuff in that area versus what we had stock back in my Academy days, I sure did miss it lol. |

last winter I rebuilt my old car's diff once in Jan, then sold it in March. The guy who bought it from me actually messaged me a few times here asking me what parts I used and how I did it because it was super smooth. He messaged me in July, 7 months later, saying he finally had to rebuild the diff because it got crunchy. And to be honest, when I built that diff, it was only because I cracked a diff ring (how? no clue.) other wise it would have been longer than 7 months. Did I have magic? nope. I followed the video instructions to the letter and it just never seemed to go bad.
Now granted, this is the extreme, but I see NO reason why the average person can't get 2-3 months out of a diff if built and adjusted properly. Unless of course you run on super high bite, then you probably need once a week. if +jf is around, he can back me up. He bought it from me. Oh and fwiw, I run on medium bite and always ran my diff medium tightness, never tight. |
