I busted a solder tab on my 10.5 and need to switch to a rarely used 17.5 while I wait for the fix.
I had been running the 10.5 with the stock spur and a 24 pinion. How should I gear the 17.5? Thanks! Oh, wait, the box was from amain and came on a big brown truck, so maybe it wasn't that big of a surprise. :) Same gearing question for a 13.5 please and thanks again! |

You win, I have a 72/32. :) 30's were out of stock
I grabbed 69, 72, 75 & 78 and 29, 31, 32 & 33. All the other pinions I have are <25 |

motor timing or esc timing!
This is for all the guro's out there which is better to run a 17.5 motor with a lot of can timing or a 17.5 with no can timing and a esc boosted? Witch one is smoother to drive? Just FYI most of the guys at my local track run blinky mode and a revtech 17.5 but the sportsman class is actually an open class.I am currently running a tekin rs gen2 esc and a tekin redline gen1 17.5 with a little can timing and esc boosted.

the tekin gen1 was designed for esc timing. The didnt put enough can timing on it to work great in blinky. motor timing is smoother, but esc timing can get you cooler temps and more punch because your drop your gearing for boost.

if you are allowed to boost, then boost it. nothing really wrong with the motor.

I recently did a trade to get a reedy 17.5t to give it a try & absolutely love it. I'm running 40* (max) on the can & 40* on the the ESC. I'm geared 30/72. After 20 minutes of hard practice against others running 7.5-8.5 motors I'm temping 150* on the can & 120* on the ESC. I give up a little on the straight, but between short straights & how smooth it is on acceleration, it's only about 1/2 a car length. The best thing about it is my average lap time went from a 2 second spread to less than 1 second spread:eek:, its that easy to drive. |

With a small straight on the layout I needed more punch rather than top speed. Once you get it close you can adjust based on the current layout you're running on.

So would you switch to a different motor or stay with what I got and run boost in the esc?

Waflet, that just tells me that you are not ready for whichever motor you were running before the 17.5. I'm in the same boat (sort of). About a month ago my best run with a 7.5 was a 24 6:06. My best run with a boosted 17.5 was a 24 6:02, but the best run with the 7.5 was on the first night of a new layout, and the best 17.5 run was a month later. I know I can crack 25 if I put the 7.5 back in, and the traffic is right. The best 7.5 run was on a Tuesday. It was just the "buggy" class, and there were guys 8-10 laps off pace. You know how hard it is to go that fast with people going that slow? |

I'm running it in an open class on a small, low to medium grip indoor track. Track conditions are the reason the motor works. On a large track &/or high grip track it would get blown away. |
