Thanks for the input !!!! I'm pretty happy with it but this hobby is addicting and I'm def getting into the racing part of it. I did ditch the radio and servo and motor and upgraded all of that to a spectrum radio savox servo and dynamite brushless motor and esc !! I recently bought a b4.1 worlds car and can see a difference in the shocks and factory parts. That's what had me curious about upgrading the the t4. But I think I'll wait it out and see what they end up releasing. Thanks again

I'm thinking about sizing down my spur from stock 87 to 84. I'm running a 20 t pinion. Any insight on increase/decrease performance when spurring down? Not to educated on the gearing side of the hobby.. Thanks

Im in the same boat. This is my first stadium truck since my Losi XXT w/hydra-drive. I ran a 12t speed gems in it. I just bought a used, but nice T4 Team truck and need a esc. My hobbyshop is giving me a great deal, but what do you think... Mamba max pro (I already have a tuner card) or duratrax DE10. They will end up being the same. I already have a trinity Nemesis 7.5 motor...

Is there a reason you are going to an 84? Dropping down to an 84 will be close to the same effect as going up one tooth on the pinion. This would result in a very slight increase in top speed/heat. Normally there is a desired result when changing gearing, not just to do it and not knowing what it does...

Well I'm looking for a bit more speed. I've tried a 21 and 22t pinion but the motor gets too hot. So I put the 20t back on and the motor and esc remain prettly cool. I was told to try to gear down on the spur to gain the speed even tho it will bring more heat. Well since I'm not overheating now maybe I can get the speed I want without overheating with the 84..not sure that's why I was hoping to get schooled on gearing.. Thanks man

No problem. You can try the 84 and see but it would act similar as going up to a 21 on the pinion. Do you actually know how hot it is getting? Below 160f is ok. 160F feels very hot to the hand and most people automatically assume it is to hot. Pick up a cheap little temp gun to verify.

Thanks man, I'll verify the temp when I pick up a gun before making adjustments. From what ive read, 20/87 is a perfect setup for the t4 instead of the stock 18/87. I'll also look more into learning gearing better. Figured I'd ask you guys what y'all think first. What setup do you run/ track conditions?

Gear for the track you're running. I run 19/84 on the small indoor, ran the 20 but never was able to top it out on the small straight. A few pages back there is a discussion I had about gearing. There are some good links to gear calculators and explanations on how and why to gear a certain way. Use the Search This Thread tool on the right.

Great site, so what I'm seeing are the recommended gear ratios they are providing for max power without overheating??

Default Gear chart

Went to the gear chart. Clicked T4.1, then my motor, then show both... But then I got an "load error" message.

Is there any good reason to change the 87t spur gear?

On the second run of my life with my new T4 I ran it through a couple puddles. It quit working. Researched. Decided I probably fried the esc and/or motor. Called team associated and they were really cool. Told me to mail them in and they'll fix/or replace them. BUT WHEN I opened up the cover to the gears I found an shredded Spur Gear... Completely destroyed. This was the stock RTR T4.1.

So, if there was ever a better time to change the spur gear... It'd be now.

Not really, just a jump off point. You have to test and see what your motor/esc likes for the track your running.

Motor comes off hot, gear up
Esc hot, gear down

Your gear mesh wasn't set properly or your motor moved. Try the site again, it's always worked fine.

to add into Hine's quote there..

I went down teeth on the spur and up on the pinion, truck handles better and temps are lower as well.
