We do some oval racing and it is common to run the mid motor with a tranny. All we do is drill a hole on the other side of tranny case and run the topshaft out the other side. You have to do some shimming with the topshaft, and put spacers between the motor plate and case but it's pretty easy.

Here's some pics of a sprint I made with a losi tranny.

Yep, that's the old school method that has been used for MM conversions since the mid 80's.You will get better rear end traction if you flip to the other side of the tranny and use a 4th gear as the torque roll of the motor will help with weight transfer instead of fight weight transfer the way it is layed out in the pic. Thank X-factory for the homework on that one!!

22Racer i have seen similar mods done to Losi trannies like that before.
I have seen guys chop the side off of an old case and epoxy it on the other side and i have seen people shim it like u have done as well.
There is a U.K. co called Atomic Carbon that makes a mod kit to change the
motor plate to the RH side of the trans. I never checked into it for the cost th ship to the U.S.

Shipping from the uk is really reasonable and fast. Its the exchange rate thats terrible.Jonathan at Atomic Carbon is a cool guy and great to work with. By the way I cant wait for a mid motored GV2.Ive ran a S2 and a X^2 wouldnt mind trying that one too. Keep up the good work.

Joel, I cant wait to finish working the bugs and kinks out of this design so I can put them out there for you guys who want them. Right now I am in constant communication with a few guys that want them.Cain being the top of the list!!

Don't worry, I don't know how to use half of them, I can use the lathe, the arc welders, the torchs (for oxyfuel welding) and starting on the mill tomorrow (snow day up here in ottawa, canada)

I just started racing indoors (just opened on the 29th, use it or loose it deal for now) and outdoors in the summer, both are just packed dirt, the indoor one with lots of turns, the outdoor one, not so much. Would adding the exra gear be much benafit as it sounds much easyer to flip the tranny.

well all i can say is that from boredom comes some crazy ideas...lol. amazing what you can do with a dremel and an extra pinion:ha:

used a genII diff gear and an extra pinion i had laying around. BAM! 4 gear tranny! it runs smooth....just a lil loud, lol.

sorry guys...rctech is being dumb wont let me upload the inside pic...

Sweet go test it out

rammstein88 12-09-2009 03:27 PM

got the pic to work.

i cannot wait to test it out.

rcjunky1 12-09-2009 03:50 PM

Now you just need a way to add some bearings so you don't wear out the case. How high do you need to shim the tranny?

rammstein88 12-09-2009 03:59 PM

the shaft does not spin....the pinion spins on the stationary shaft.

YoungChazz 12-09-2009 05:18 PM

Here is where we start to see the difficulty of the entire thing.

Ramm, if I look at the photo correctly, you are going to get a ton of premature wear on the diff gear and idler #2. That mesh is just too tight. Idler #1 needs replaced now, and I suspect wear there will be rapid as well from improper mesh with idler #2. Hard to tell because #1 is so worn. If you keep running idler #1 with that top shaft, the top shaft will be next.

When we built our 4-Gear tranny, we measured gear spacing to the nearest 10,000th and worked the tool three times to get it correct. A very expensive proposition, but the results are great. Gear spacing is as much art as science.

Gear meshes are critical when doing this. Just because it fits in there and seems free does not mean it's right.

Keep going guys -- it's great to watch.

rammstein88 12-09-2009 05:30 PM

the mesh is thrown off in the pic because the way i am holding it the gars have shifted position. with this i wasn't going for anything nice. more of a test mule to see if my idea worked, i have autoCAD and i am starting to design a real tranny. meshing the gears in cad will be easy...just need a machinist, lol.

ps, the gears in the tranny look like crap as it is a crap tranny...not my good one. lol.

Chazz- Good to see you stoppin in again.

This would be great if it could be made. This was pulled off Oople and they were hand made by Elvo. Im sure you guys have seen it.
