but whats the deal- just pulled it apart to clean before run-in and i can't even get the piston and conrod out, theres no room for the conrod to slide off the crank pin- and yes i know its a stupid thing to say since it was put in that way but unless i use alot of force it ain't coming out.

Mark, how do you want me to run this engine in and standard a-main or C2???

Hi Sov.

It is a snug fit on purpose, don't do anything, just run it as is according to the instructions on the MASSIVEMODS site bud.

Contact Mark direct as he is busy and dosen't get on the forum' often Or speak to Darren, but he will tell you the same thing as I just posted.

You can't go wrong with either of those fuel choices.

Flanno.

So usual run in for a Go motor, alfoil on head and heat gun, start, adjust lsn so it just idles, a tank through on the box to flush it out (not too long) then straight on the ground, slow figure 8's for a tank or 2 gradually building revs for another 4 to 6 tanks then its time to lean on her. Replace rod and rear bearing after say about 4 litres.

Badrun, GRP plugs should work ok, its each to there own really, I know guys running Go's, LRP's, OS's and Ninja's plugs. I personally prefer OS Plugs (a P3 for break in to make getting an idle dead easy, then swap to P4 or cooler), and from memory MM crew use LRP or Go plugs predominantly. It really is a personal preference thing.

I am deeply envious of you boys with your new MG66's. Seeing the power and fuel economy for myself at the truggy titles was an eye opener and Flanno's motor running past 15 minutes was just plain crazy. I'm breaking in the .25 pro this weekend with turbo head button for the RC8T, should be fun.

The Choben One 08-13-2009 05:42 PM

ended up leaving the the conrod/piston in flanno, didn't want to damage it.
Thanks for all the info guys, motor in buggy now to be run-in tonight.
And yeah as some noticed at the nats' i was running a ninja. Thought i'd try the go engine now so i don't feel like the dark horse in the hobbyzone/massivemods team plus i wanna try one anyway after seeing the one in deano's car, should be good. If its all good ill get another one for the truggy.
Thanks again guys.

Spot on with the foiled head etc, but I would give it more like 12 - 15 tanks before leaning too much. I know the new 66's have reduced initial pinch as compared to the older Gen 5 motors, but they will still need a reasonable bedding period like any other motor.
I have used the foiled head / run rich at 100 - 115 deg C break in method on all my GO's, and they are still running strong with good compression later in their racing lives :) I always ran 12 tanks foiled working up to very short full throttle bursts on the 12th tank. Then I remove the foil and tune to a moderate race tune, just a little on the rich side and run easy for another 3 tanks around the track. After these last three tanks I put a normal race tune on and let her go. Replacing the rod, pin, pin clips and maybe bearings at the 8 - 9 litre mark.
I then change bearings and rod every three gal of race time after that. Maybe a bit on the overkill side, but 3 gal is a lot of of hard racing time, and I've never had an engine problem or failure to date. Just my .02c worth.

Hey Sovvy !

Welcom to the dark side of the light . Re run in sheet .. i should have been more specific with it .. i should state to just take the head and back plate off to inspect and flush if needed .. the engines from Go are pristine inside so its a general rule really just to be sure to be sure..

Whats freaking me out is that Deano came 6th with the MG66 .. hmmm

Thanks again for making me part of the team.
Ive been runing go engines for 2 years now and the MG66 definetly the whole package great bottom end and top.

This allowed me to run 48tooth spur instead of 50. This gave me great top speed on the straight and the motor still had bottom end to clear jumps out of turns.

The motor didnt miss a beat all 4 days .Apart from changing plug before Qualies for my own piece of mind.

Because of radio issues wasnt able to get a run time in practise and qualies.
Decided to run the gauntlet and go for ten minute qualifier it made it with a little to spare.

Going into the main decided not to change the plug as it still looked perfect.
Adam alexander and I decided to run aka gridions soft because it was spitting rain on and off during the day. When it rained on that groove it became very slippery and gridions worked well on this.
The weather gods decide to only let spit rain for about 2 minutes out of the hour this made our tire choice bad as half to 40 minutes into race tires had gone of pace bummer.

Decided to pit every 8 to 9 minutes to play safe because when it rained fuel millage went up.

To wrap it up was very happy to just make the main. Then to finish 6th was a bonus.

Congrats to MASSIVE for designing a go engine to compete with the likes of o.s and others.

Just wanted to post up a question/scenario for the GO guru's :D

i went to the track the other day (only got 2 tanks through) as there where a lot of wet/muddy patches to contend with. Car is absolutely filthy now and covered in mud, first tank ran well, 2nd tank started off good, i was almost through the tank (bout an 8th of a tank left) and under acceleration to get over a little double it got that weird sound when its lean (sounds like its missing), 2 corners later it flamed out.

There was still enough fuel in the tank for it to keep going, i thought it might be the air filter coz the front of it had muddy water on it (the inner filter was spotless though (i'd say only 25 to 30% of the outer filter had the muddy water on it).

Oh yeah running the GO gen 5.5 7 port with the 2072 pipe. Only about 1.3 to 1.5 L through the motor so far. I thought it was the dirty outer filter to start with, but i dont think that should have caused the flame out. Does the motor richen itself or lean itself when the piston and sleeve start loosening up?

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give all the info. I know i need to richen it up now (i havent run the motor since the flame out) possible causes? As there was no signs of it running lean before this.

richen the hsn 1 hour at a time, until problem go's away.

I realise i need to richen it, just trying to find out what the cause of the problem is. As it was a very recent development, i had the car going almost full throttle with plenty of smoke and no problems what so ever and then this happened. So its not as if i had been running a lean tune.

When i pulled the car in after the first tank temp was 127. End of 2nd tank i had the problem.

mattwoodcraft 08-16-2009 03:05 PM

it can be a common thing when around the half a tank mark.... since you were cruzing around you have enough fuel flow passing the main needle to drive and then you open it up more so you the motor wanting more fuel flow through the main but you have restricted it by leaning it off to much just by opening it up by 1 hour will make a huge differance

mattwoodcraft 08-16-2009 03:07 PM

just leave your main needle flush and do all your tuning from the bottem end and you wont have a prob ...

some times i have to run my high speed needle 1hour above flush depending on the day :)
