@Eeerlyboid
I think if I were starting fresh right now, I'd probably go with ARC. When the R10 was released (2012?) it quickly gained a reputation for build quality and durability on par with XRay. The price is lower. It's gaining popularity and parts are flowing. And from seeing locals with it, it clearly works well right out of the box.
AE is not worth the money, IMO. VBC and ARC are both better cars, at a similar or lower price point. Shocks, fit and finish, and durability are all issues.
VBC got popular, and the D06 dynamics that includes DCJs and both carbon and aluminum chassis seems like a good value, but there's the D07 on the way. Korey's gone through a lot of struggles making the car work for him, and Ehrlich's car is a Frankenstein so I've heard. So maybe not the best choice for out-of-the-box performance. Also, not quite as durable, but not too bad. I guess maybe just not as impressive as ARC.
Xray... Parts are 30-50% cheaper if you order them from www.rcmarket.com.hk and get here in about 4-5 days, but you basically won't need them. I crashed my T4'14 repeatedly at TZII, and finally ripped a corner off, broke a shock tower, twisted the FR block, cracked the hinge pin block inserts, cracked the top deck, and slightly tweaked a couple hinge pins. Yes, that's a pretty expensive list. But arms, steering knuckles, and c-hubs are not on that list, they're fine. If you crash like that, it's worth ordering from Hong Kong in which case the parts costs are normal compared to other cars. If you don't crash that bad, you're simply not gonna need the parts. Out of the box, it works extremely well, but you'll want to factor in the cost for Spec-R, Roche, or Reflex DCJs, and maybe some Roche spring steel spool cups. Maybe also some springs, but honestly, I keep finding myself going back to the kit ones.
Yokomo... Volker and Donny make a good case in terms of performance. Cost of entry is higher than Xray, though, for sure. The kit doesn't come with DCJs or the floating servo mount, and it sounds like there are some shock parts and diff O-rings that are basically required. But I don't know about parts costs, or durability.
In general, durability isn't just about parts costs. It's also about race night frustration. Breaking a car and losing a run because of it just plain sucks.

This, +100. Nobody can deny that my Tamiya is a fast car (I watched Jenkins spank some fast laps in it), but it requires a good, clean driver who also understands setups... which, sadly, I am not. At least not yet. It'll shine in the hands of the right person, and I'm hoping that person will buy it
