what's a good BL esc and motor for this car?

my local shop suggested trinity 17.5 motor and Novak Havoc 3S. is this a godo combo?

should I stick with novak 3S 21.5t kit?

hmm... really? no motor overheating issues racing?

I dont' want to run a cooling fan on the motor.

are you running the ballistic motor? or regular motor.

if you're running 13.5 with regular.. I may just pick it up from the shop since they have the 13.5 but have to order teh 17.5

Motor is a Novak EX 13.5 sport and its one of the original Havoc Sports. I was not running on a track yesterday, street by my house for testing. Did not have temp gun with me.. motor did get warm / hot but not to the point of over heating.

My Havoc is one of the first batch so and has not had the "fix" for thermal protection.. and yesterday I wanted to see if it would shut down.. and it did not.

I should add my car came with a 60T spur and 37T pinion.. so thats the gearing I was running.

Heyo, new guy here. New in two ways, to the forum, and to r/c in general (last r/c I had was ~15 years ago, crappy little thing from Toys-R-Us). Got my Cup Racer last week and have been loving it since!

Took me ~6 hours to build, was being 'good' and trimming off bits of excess plastic from the molding process, doing my best to follow the directions precisely. First r/c kit I have built, but won't be my last, I am also looking to get a crawling rig going.

Anywho, I got the drift kit, so it's 225mm wheelbase, front shocks are in upright (originally had in lay-down, but I think this handles a bit better). Running a Traxxas Velineon VXL-3s ESC w/ the 3500kV Traxxas brushless motor. Futaba R153F receiver, Futaba S3003 servo, and Venom NiMh stick packs (one 3000, one 3300). I am eyeing LiPo setups, just don't have the cash now.

This is mostly just 'cheap' entertainment for me, not looking to get into the competition side of R/C. A buddy of mine bought a CR, i liked it, as did my bro-in-law, so we all have them now.

Next upgrade will be another set of wheels/tires (looking at a set of the Super Radials I think), and then a new body (I'm much more into Euro cars, know of a good 80's VW shell?).

Anyway, enough with the wall-o-text, here's some pics:

EDIT : well crap, can't post pics till I have 'a certain number of posts'.

go to twardnw (dot) com, and search for 'Cup Racer', the pics will come up then.

Looks like this car has more suspension travel, and only limited by shocks.

Anyone know if there are other cars that I can swap out the shocks with to get more travel?

thinking of converting it in to rally. think,.. porsche rally. haha

actually there is more limiting the suspension travel then just the shocks...gotta remember if you give the car TOO much travel, the CVD will not fit correctly into the diff out drives...

try removing those 'plates' from under the front and rear diff cars - that will raise the chassis and give you more ride height...also back out the screws in the suspension arms that act as the 'downstops' - that will also give you a good chunk more of suspension movement..

but if you are going to make it into a rally setup, definitely go with a standard TC shock - you don't need anything super long, just a standard shock like you'd see on a cyclone, Sport2, tc5 etc, and those will DEFINITELY give you more ground clearance..

I do believe that if you remove the downstop on the suspension arms and the lowering plates under the diff houses, you'll get what you are looking for I did it on mine, and was suprised how much clearance I had - then i lowered everything back down to a 'race level' ride height

sweet thanks!.. I'll try that. Rally don't need that much clearance. not like buggies. just need enough to go over small bumps and take small jumps too.

Hi Guys,

I ready to ditch my M04M and am interested in buying a cup racer.

A few questions though please.

1/ My M-04M Roadster body (226mm) will fit straight on right (except maybe some faffing with body mounts).

2/ What's the highest gearing you can fit on the CR (as in for top speed)?

3/ I have a 9T 4300kv Ezron motor and Esc sitting here, it's far too much of a motor for the M04M, how would the CR handle it?

Cheers
Mark

You are going have straight line bursts maybe but no chance of turning.
I know with 14T brushed I can't control it but at half throttle it is ok
but you should try it anyhow cuz it's just so darn fun to rip it up
oh yeah by the way that is with stock gearing
