The Switch is a disappointment? Not terribly surprised, actually.

I can see half a dozen cheap little things that could be done to improve the car just by looking at the photos. Replace all the linkages with adjustable turnbuckles, add some shocks, lose the 35T paperweight and there's potential.

The suspension design is probably the biggest flaw. That's pretty much the same setup as the front end of my dad's old 1974 Pontiac Parisienne, or any old RWD car for that matter. I just can't figure out what the hell they were thinking when that was approved for production.

But in the SWITCH's defense. In its present form, It would never compare to the MO3 for the simple fact of the Dampers.. Or the lack there of. And (If you know HPI like i do) the lack of any 'metallic' or 'adjustable' turnbuckles should suggest that this is by no means 'a racer' $0.02. I gotta admit the suspension is a lil 'unconventional'. Bu me being the gearhead i am, would love to give it a whirl.

A good benchmark, But until you get your hands on some Dampers for that thing, I wouldn't pass judgement just yet. I've seen pics of them, I would imagine they will be released shortly. Possibly a PRO Version?

But in 'our' defense.. Hee hee.. We tested what they supply.

And as I said toward the end of the story, an equivalent M03 (XB kit - ready to run) would just annihilate the Switch in every way. In fact we're going to run the Switch against an M01 next week to see how it fares.

And dampers won't help much anyway. The steering system is so unbelievably bad that it requires some significant changes to make it work even passably.

But I have to mention here that we're still gonna try to improve the thing. No doubt the aftermarket people will jump onto it fairly quickly - because if ever there was a car that needed help, it's this one.

For us, it's just a HUGE disappointment. It promised so much but turned out so...awful.

Someone has probably mentioned this. But, 3racing is coming out with a M03 TT-01 conversion kit. Is there any word on a release date?

hmm....a 4WD mini......i personally feel that even with short wheel base, the mini feel its gone, its will feel like a srink down 1/10 touring car...

true feeling with a front wd mini....of course the traction roll....

Edwin, you hit the nail on the head. Nothing but a shrinked down touring car.

A true M-chassis is either FWD or RWD. And a true "mini" is FWD. But we both know 4WD mini TC's would be fun but i have a feeling tamiya will make one....


What's a 1:1 scale car with a super short wheelbase that's 4WD??????? If so that's tamiyas 4WD M-chassis


And about that TT01 mini....what's left from the TT01??? the diffs? Bearings? It seems like a whole different car!

4WD Minis are.....boring.

Edwin is 100% correct, they end up just like a shrunken Touring Car and all of the character of the Mini is gone.

Interestingly enough we had a couple of 4WD Minis at the track when we did the HPI Switch test. Tony P had his Cup Racer there just to play with the setup a bit, and Tim had the super-rare (and expensive) TN Racing 4WD TA05 conversion.

And...they struggled to go quicker than what we normally would with our M03's!

The only reason the ABC Genetic and the Cup Racer have sold well is because of the unique body shells they have on them. Otherwise they would have been dead in the water like all the 4WD's before them that have come and gone. When did you last see a Yokomo MR4TC-M, Corally Mini Assassin or X Ray T1-M for sale?

And THAT is why Tamiya have done the M05, so that they can offer a mini chassis that will accept a wider range of bodyshells, it's not a better chassis, just a differently configured one.

I agree 1000% with the above.

But the m05 will have less body roll due to low COG.

There's improvments of the m05 that the m03 doesn't have. And yes it could carry a wider selection of bodys. Which that's 100% better. the m05 if going to blossom into a bigger mini FWD/FF craze

Pretty much exactly what Tamiya have done with the M05. We had 2 of them. Tried them - made NO discernible difference to the car at all.
