Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

Gear diff vs ball diff is a personal preference so I won't comment on that. I have however purchased two of the serpent gear diffs and they are a direct swap other than shimming. Very nice pieces also. Be aware there are two gear diffs offered by serpent, one has an aluminum exterior gear and the other one is plastic. Other than that they are the same. I run the aluminum version in mod and the plastic in stock.

I definitely recommend gear diff for carpet. Don't bother with the Losi RTR diff, just get the Serpent one. I run the SRX-4 diff, which has the aluminum outer gear. It is usually $5 cheaper than the plastic-gear SRX-2 diff, but I think that's just a supply-demand thing. They are otherwise identical, and you can interchange the plastic and aluminum outer gear on either.

He said they might be a good option to try if you are trying to get higher roll center to free up the buggy mid corner.
I asked about the bone plunge, but no specific answers were given.

The feedback from both seems overwhelmingly positive, so I don't think there's a wrong choice.

FWIW,
I have the exotek & +3mm hubs coming in the mail, so we'll see what happens.
I have some +3mm hubs and a HRC front block on my wish list. I'm just waiting to see some feed back to see if I want to pull the trigger on them. So I will be curious to see if you can tell a difference from stock hubs to +3mm.

Amain went from $179 to $199 since last week. They seem to price most of their TLR parts above Horizon's price, so kinda surprised it wasn't $199 all along....

When they have a lot to sell, I guess they can offer to the lower price to make sure they well. Now that they are sure they'll sell out, they raised the price to get the extra $20 profit.

Can't say it's the right or wrong thing to do, but it's smart business I suppose. Don't discount something you know you can sell full pop...

That puts my 2wd at the same price range as my 8th scale.

I'll stick with HRC blocks on the standard car and just drive my tail off.

No immediate plans.

As usually, even if there was, I definitely couldn't discuss them...

Do the holes in the laydown TLR334037 hubs go in order from A-F starting from the middle of the car? It's a bit confusing looking at the laydown setups on TLR's website when the setups sheet shows the 'normal' hub and the holes are not in order.

The first inner hole in each row are extra compared to a standard hub
