Guys....
Got the Hyperion Duo charger today and the very first thing they comment about is be sure to use the balance tap and to connect and disconnect in the proper order. Right away, I see that the Hyperion 2S balance tap has 5 pins while the SMC 5000 has only 3. Was there an adapter I needed? Are you guys using the balance system?

Oh, and in the instructions, it did call out that if you create your own charge leads that they need to be a minimum of 14g and no longer then 8". So there must be a voltage drop concern.

Brian,

I didn't keep the header cards with the part numbers; but, sure that you need the following Hyperion parts to connect to the SMC 4000/5000 packs with Deans plugs:

#1) HP-OUTCORD HYPERION OUTPUT CHARGER WIRE SET W/2 X 4 MM MALE BANANA PLUG $3.95

Then you only have to solder a Deans plug (male) to the bare ends of the Wire Set.

And

#2) HP-LB10-XH-B HYPERION MULTI-ADAPTER BALANCE HARNESS 2S-6S-XH $4.95 (EDIT: Now confirmed with the part number indicated. My apologies to IBCKevin for the wrong info earlier 10/6/08)

These replace the two multi-adapters that came with the charger. The balance plug on the SMC 5000 pack connects to the smallest port on this adapter.

With the Duo, you will want two sets of the above.

Cheers!

Bill

I've heard second hand from some racers about some smc lipos being the best packs they've ever ran... my maxamps 4400 saddle pack in my B44 is failing...need a new saddle pack...and soon, more reg lipos to replace my orion 3200s in my other cars.... Found this thread but haven't read every page.. What's the skinny on the smc saddle packs? or where can I find some more info on them? http://www.smc-racing.com/ is of no use...

thanks!

oh, and what kind of balancing tap?..like orions or not?

Our local shop has had the saddle packs for a couple of weeks now, so they should be order-able at your LHS.

I have been getting some great help here, so I thought that I would keep the momentum going. I have been trying to find the right balance adapter for the Hyperion Duo charger I just purchased. There maybe an old and a new multi-adapter or just a different part #. Here's a pic of my situation. I have an email out to the supplier.

I still have not got an answer if everyone is using a balancer or not. Or does balancing get done rarely.

Thanks!
Brian

Maybe I am a little soft in the grey matter. Bill has told me what I need. Everyone agree?

Still: balance or not to balance?

brian, if your asking is it a must, no you do not need to balance charge everytime, does it hurt no, how often do you need to balance, depends on the quality of the cells, as you know i ran two or three times a week, i will put my lipos on a balancer once a month or every other month, they balance themselves in about 5 minutes, usually less

SIR may have the adapters you need for balancing in stock

Hi Brian
I would balance the first fresh or new lipo (don't charge)..for reason that is to know what's the condtion of the voltage reading between two cell,,...then charge the lipo after balancer done...

PS if you charge and balancer at the same time ,it would take longer to charge to finish...if the two cell voltage are reading the same # form the start then it no sweat..the charge will be done shorter time..

PSS You have to set your charger at balance mode to balancing the two cell the same..

Brian,

That adapter you took the picture of is useless for the SMCs. Mine are already put away in a drawer. Probably will serve no purpose...ever.

PM Danny at SMC and start a dialog with him. He is a master of this stuff and has set me on the right course every time...NIMH and Lipo-wise.

And, I bet that he will also tell you the next step to go.

Bill...Not in the least bit sponsored by SMC...LOL
