Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

Starting a fresh build and hitting the tired wall so time to stop. I have a question concerning the servo shimming. I am going to install the trackstar TS-915, does anyone know what shim is to be used or how much to shim it? I know it uses the futaba spline for servo horn. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will check back tomorrow as the eyes are heavy lol.

What is servo shimming and what is it for? I've never done this.

Default Gearing questions.

Hey guys, I'm racing the 17.5 class at my local track and using 70/30 gears. I ran the 17/31 and my temps coming off the track were around 110. I went down a tooth pinion wise and it changed to around 115. How far would you recommend me change the gearing to stay under temp and still get good performance out of the car. By the way the track is med. to high bite hard packed, mostly smooth with some rough spots in and out of the main straight. Thanks in advance if any of you have any advice!

You want the servo turnbuckle to be perpendicular to the chassis for maximum throw. The shims are used to move the servo forward if the turnbuckle isn't perpendicular.

Thanks man, I'll give that a whirl on my 3.0 when it comes.

It's early in the morning and my brain isn't functioning, but what is a 17/31?

Your gearing sounds like you're close. I'm not sure what timing people are using on the Reedy M3, but if your temp is 115 after eight minutes you have nothing to worry about. Most people shoot for anywhere from 160-180 depending on manufacturer. How is the performance compared to others? Personally, I'd add a few teeth to the pinion and turn up the timing to shoot for 160 after eight minutes.

17/31 was a typo lol I meant 70/31. Performance is there but I'm still about a second off the fast guys lap times. Could be my driving too though I'll just have to push it a little harder next practice day see what I can do with it.

Get a motor checker and bump the timing closer to 50*. I run mine between 45-50.

Car has a slight on-power push, using kit setup with 32.5 in front and pink rear springs. High grip track. What would be the top 3 things you would try changing? Tires are right.

Thanks!

What's your ride height? If you're running higher in the front than the rear I would try leveling it out. I run 21mm front 20mm rear but I don't feel a push. Maybe 20mm front and rear would help you

Thanks!
Long VLA, Lower front bulkhead ballstud 1mm, and raise rear bulkhead 1-2mm.

Frank seems to be a big fan of 1mm std ballstud ackerman setting, so I'd proly give that a shot first!

When are the wheel companies going to get on some front wheels for this hot rod? I love the different colors that DE has for the other popular buggies

Thanks!
Try Frank Root's setup for the Reedy Race @ OCRC. I was getting the push as well, this took a lot of that away.
