I just built my diffs using the mugen gaskets, with the stock number of shims. It feels smooth, with a little gear 'purr' as I hand turn the outdrives. Not sure how it should feel - buttery, or clickety. Mine is in the middle.
Any sage advice?

I think we probably all have a different perception of smooth. So it would be hard to tell without actually seeing it.

I'm in Australia, my parents are in houston for the next 3 weeks on business, they are happy to pick up a RC8BE kit for me while there, i just need to know where to send them, ie which hobby shop. but it sounds like i'm going to be out of luck if every one is on waiting lists!
Can anybody suggest where i should tell them to go? They are staying on SAGE ROAD in the Galleria District. the closer to there the better. Otherwise any ideas of a on-line store that will ship to australia?

It fits just fine. You have to trim the battery box just a tad for the wires, but other than that, the fit is very good.

I'd say you want the mesh to be as close as possible without binding. When I tried adding a shim, I could definitely tell the outdrive with much harder to turn and much more notchy, so I took the shim out.

I've heard people mention M&M, as they have a track. Couldn't hurt to call them.

The problem with Google is that it'll pick up shops that you're not interested in (Toys R Us, and other toy stores, or train only stores, etc), but this should get you started:
