Our tracks are the same way. I had way more "torque" or bottom end with the OS pipe than JP-4. I'm wondering if whatever Jammin did with the 4 to make it legal took away the pep the JP3 had, for anyone that tells you the JP3 and JP4 are basically the same hasn't run both of them.

Can anybody explain how to set up the idle gap to the right point for the GoTech 7 port? From reading the posts I gather that this should be somewhere around .7 - 1 mm? Is it just a visual thing after you remove your air filter? If so what does 1 mm look like, visually? I hate to ask dumb questions, but I think I have been suffering from an idle setting that is too high to compensate for the LSN set possibly too rich.

Again from reading the posts I think I am supposed to set the Idle gap to 1mm, then set the HSN for smoke and good power, then come back and work the LSN till I get a consistent idle, is that correct? My motor already has about 3/4 a gallon on it, but has been leaning out a bit at the end of runs. Lastly, can you hurt the engine with a LSN that is too lean if your high speed is blowing good smoke? Not sure how to set the LSN correctly, so thanks for any help.

Wow that is surprising. I have a JP-2 on my 5pt and got more than 7 minutes run time still in break in mode (under a gallon) at about 220. you should be getting close to eight I would think.

even a stock 5 port should go 10 with the right pipe, these are the pipes i run that will go 10 min on my engines

also i run a 6.5 and 7 mm carb insert. Chris Pace runs stock and modded 5 port and go's 10+, even on really big tracks, get the tune right and drive smart and you will be good to go.

Cherokee180c - The idle gap should be .7mm - 1mm, which is not very big. If you set it and it looks too small to you, then it is probably pretty close. If your buggy keeps stalling when you button off, then it probably is to small, so go just a smidge wider, but not too much. You are on the right track with the last part of your post regarding setting the LSN.

Get the engine and chassis nice and warm (run about 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank through on the ground at bashing or race pace). Refill to half a tank then tune the HSN for near max power with good smoke right to the end of the rev range. Now adjust your LSN so when you bring your buggy in it idles consistantly without "loading up" and suddenly dropping revs (sure sign of a too rich LSN). If it does load up and drop revs, lean the LSN 1/8 of a turn at a time and do a little run around and bring it back in and try again. Keep adjusting at 1/8 increments until you have a smooth idle that doesn't drop. Now run it around a bit more and bring it to a stop for 6 - 10 seconds then give it full throttle. Buggy should pull away smoothly with consistant smoke from take off to full speed. If it bogs or seems flat then the LSN is still out.
Another good test for the LSN is to have your buggy at idle then pinch the fuel tubing off about 1" from the carb. You should notice a slight (about 500 - 800 rpm) increase in revs, then the motor should die withing about 4 - 6 seconds. If the motor dies straight away with no increase in revs then your LSN is too lean. If the motor revs up sharply or runs for longer than 4 - 6 seconds then your LSN is too rich. Once you have the LSN set correctly now adjust the idle gap if necessary to give a good idle speed.

It sounds like your LSN is too rich and your HSN is too lean. This is whats causing your engine to run lean or too hot at the end of a tank. Engine runs ok and sounds ok, but you are missing out on good crisp bottom end and more power at the top. Phew !! bit long winded, but there is no quick way to explain this. Hope this all makes sense and gets you running better.

Actually I appreciate the time and effort for a detailed post. I beleive I had about 60% of the procedure correct, but the details you provided about waiting till everything is good and hot at half tank etc. will really help me. I am sure I was a bit lean on top end, probably because I was not getting the snap out of the bottom end.

Depends on ambient temperature.
I use OS P6(hot) with around 70-80 ambient.
Now i use SH #7 (med-cold) with >90 ambient.

i use a o.s p3 in my 3port

I consider myself a good driver, I know throttle control. I will try the hyper 2059 pipe, also, I'm running a P3 glow plug. And I think I got a good tune, nice power all around but I don't think leaning it out is an option since it's already in the 250's F.

Go go brag. At the S.African Pro Series Finals Oct 07, in my one Qualifier my Go 7 Port, with HN2027 pipe was clocked at 63Km/h, down the straight, putting alot of RB, JP,N-Rossi engine owner's noses out of joint. To prove the toughness of this motor, I ran in the engine in Jan 07 and in the year ran 6 club races, 4 Nationals & 4 Pro Series events, standard out the box, no mods and the only flame out was this year in the seasons 1st club race after my newly painted body's paint melted on the air filter and paint got sucked into the engine. Dreading the worst cleaned out the engine replaced the glow plug and 2 races later engine is purring. Still has a good pinch. Most probably jinxed it now(hope not) but it was worth sharing.
