You shouldn't need the Voltage Protector (cap) in your application. The only times I've found that I needed to use the Voltage Protector is if I am using an LRP or Tekin speed controller. I normally run the KO VFS series of speed controllers along with Novak SS and GTB brushless ESC's without any issue, running stock and 19t motors.

you may need to set the BEC to 3.5 or 4 volts

I bought my spektrum system when they first came out and no problems. I am assumming my system has the old software. Do I need to send the module and receivers or just the receivers?

you should send both back in for upgrade of software

Yup, and that's exactly what I do with my VFS speedos and they've always worked perfectly

Default Spektrum Rollout Factor

So, I called Horizon today and found out that the manual is incorrect. Here's the correction I got in an email from tech support:

FYI, there is an error in the manual regarding the roll out calculation for computing the speed from the rpm.

For method A in the manual you are to measure how far the car moves in inches in 10 revolutions of the item being used to measure the rpm by the sensor (this would be the spur gear, flywheel, etc), then divide by 10 to compute the roll out. There is one step to add to that calculation however, you must convert the measurement in inches to feet. So for this method measure how far the car rolls in 10 revolutions of the spur gear, flywheel, etc, in inches, then divide that measurement by 120 (12 times 10). So if for instance the car rolls 43 inches in 10 revolutions, divide 43 by 120 to compute the roll out value to store in the handheld unit which would be .358 which would round up to .4 .

For method B, you first compute the circumference of the tire by measuring the diameter of the tire in inches and multiply by pi (3.14), then divide that number by the internal gear ratio of the vehicle. Here again however this must be converted to feet. So as an example, say the diameter of the tire is 2.5 inches, if the internal gear ratio of the car is 1.83, multiply 2.5 by 3.14, then divide by 1.83 which comes out to 4.29, divide this number then by 12 to convert to feet and you get .3575, which again rounds up to .4 .

Hey guys can anybody tell me why most of the top Electric tourning racers don't use the Spektrum System? This was brought up on the iic-live chat and all the info I could pull from it was a bunch of flaming. But is it true that they don't use the Spektrum system?
Thanks

Just from my personal experience, I have a bit more than usual, voltage dips. The Spektrum receiver draws a lot of power. This coupled with a powerful motor and a digital servo, will send the Spektrum into failsafe mode. Up until about 2 1/2 weeks ago, I was running a JR Xr3. Since going to the Spektrum, I have had three instances where the voltage dipped, car rolled to a stop and I got blasted. Ordered the Spektrum Cap that is supposed to limit if not, eliminate this. If it doesnt, . Carpet racers, when Spektrum first dropped, had serious static electricity issues. I havent even gone there yet.....still running on asphalt. I dread going indoors. Just my .05 cents.

The comments I heard were simply that most drivers are sponsoered by other radio manufacturers so can't use a Spektrum. There was an early complaint too that it wasn't fast enough. I'm not good enough of a driver to feel the difference in speed. I use Spektrum quite a bit and have never had a problem with it. I love not having to bother with frequency clips and jerks turning radios on in the pits.

I find the radio to be quite responsive. I use it for my Pro 4 and my Savage. It throws my "Big Joes" around like nothing and quickly! It is with my electric, does the Spektrum give me fits.

Lets see, top drivers using Spektrum in various classes include guys like Team Losi's Todd Hodge and Travis Amescua, Serpent's Chris Tosolini who won this year's Gas Sedan Nats with a Spektrum system, CRC's Frank Calandra JR won the 1/12th scale Stock class at the '05 IIC, Traxxas' Steve Slayden runs Spektrum equipment, and more. A lot more people use it than you'd think. I'm trying to confirm this, but I even think Dumas may have run it this weekend at the IIC too.

What I find funny is that the Freq that the Specktrum is in is a very clean band. I can see where the Spektrum can suck voltage. THe "radio" in that thing has to do a lot of work. I was just wondering because I've never really had any problems with my M8 before I sold it. I was really thinking of going back to the FM radio with the Sanwana M11 or the KoPro Po (SP?).

I ran my Spektrum Pro all week at the IIC this last week in Vegas and had no problems. And there were more Spektrum systems there than I've ever seen at a big race in use there. Any issues that existed with the original system, IMO, are gone.

Very cool. That is what I really wanted to hear was from somebody that has it and raced at the IIC. Thanks man.
