I have a Schumacher SST 2000 SP. It has many hop ups like all carbon fiber and bearings and its in good shape and I got a mountain of spares. Is it going to be alright for usgt or is it just too old and slow? . Im a total beginner also, so I don't think I need the best car.
Also the club near me is using 17.5 stock for usgt if that changes anything.

As a beginner you will want to work on driving consistency first before worrying about having the best car. That SST should work just fine to start out with.

After having been away from this hobby for decades, I chose USGT as my point of re-entry. I'm in the SF Bay Area and haven't been to a race yet, mostly because of the public health situation. I'm trying not to let the recent posts about waning interest get me down. But looking at it from the outside, I do think that USGT has a lot of things going for it and I'm excited to get started again.

If I remember correctly, NorCal Hobbies will start their racing this coming weekend.

Glad to read this. I think speed wise, USGT and 17.5 stock tc are just about perfect. I just received a box of spares and maintenance parts today for my USGT car and I couldn't wait to get off work and start wrenching on it again.
When you do race again, be safe and have fun! We need more people to come back to RC!

quick question about body weight rules.....
does fwd have to follow the 95g rule or not? most fwd shells are under that weight and there is no approved list of fwd bodies.

If he is running on high bite carpet, those rules simply do not apply anymore. You have to have a newer chassis just to be able to get out of the way.

I went back to my local track after a year of Covid lock down and I was humbled and surprised at the speeds that USGT, VTA and 21.5 touring are now.

21.5T touring is faster than 17.5 was just a year ago. USGT is close to 17.5T speeds and VTA are close to USGT speeds.

Now you have to have the high dollar stuff to be competitive, the rest of the comp is simply to fast. If I was coming into a fresh setup for racing, I would not even waste my time racing that chassis. I would go and practice, practice practice, sell the old stuff that you have, buy new(er) option, and then go and race with the crowd.

There truly is not a beginner class anymore, they are all fast and competitive.

I think most of those guys already had some really nice rides, and they put in the time. Apex has a very talented pool of racers from top to bottom.

Very helpful, but can only help you so much if your stuff is really out of date. I know track to track that changes and it is different, but I really was in shock at the speeds and consistency. Corner speed, entering a corner, exiting a corner, trying to run a line, straight line speed, all of it is at another level now.

Really fun, but I am now fully understanding why, Xray, Awsomatic, Serpert cars are used in those classes.

Of course, these are just my opinions.

what was you running?

you did improve over the day...and you was running in the 21.5 TC class... VTA might have been better...nobody would have had an issue with it
