I've always run SMC batteries, they are great. I was getting the 5000 mah, 70C 2S packs and they only weighed in at 257 grams. I splurged and got his 6000 mah 100C Extreme Race pack in November, but it weighs 312 grams and I'm overweight now. Plus for some reason that battery has puffed. Danny says the Extreme Race were really packed in tight in the plastic case and they tend to puff some.

Anyway, fast forward to now and I decided to retire my 5000's and buy his new 5200 mah, 90C batteries and they only weigh 282 grams which just perfect for what I need. I have three packs and I couldn't be happier.

And to the poster that asked about what to do with the side that is not used for the 5mm inboard connectors, just put tape over that side, I use a clear packing tape. I also use nail polish and paint the PLUS sign red, just to make sure I don't hook up backwards.

I'm extremely sorry if this has been covered before...I am currently using EC connectors, the larger ones (can't remember if the bigger ones are EC3 or 5).

But man these things are hard to get together and apart for battery changes, charging etc. Are these the best choice or is there a better connector?

I have two Losi 8eight e-buggies using SMC 6500 70C batteries (a few years old but still going strong).

If there is a more convenient connector then I am all for it but I wouldn't want to sacrifice safety of performance. It's basically impossible for my 12yr old son to pull the battery from the buggy. I have to do it...and it's still a pain.

Thanks for any help!

I've always used Dean's for my 1/8 rc's. I find them a lot easier to disconnect without worrying if it'll come undone while driving. Traxxas plugs are also a little easier to disconnect compared to ec5. But deans are easier to reuse

that's the whole point is they're hard to disconnect. I've had plenty of deans connectors come apart in a race. I just run my velcro straps over the wires now. instead of buying all new connectors. so if you want to go with deans just be sure to strap the wires down to keep them from pulling apart. a few hard landings or tumbles a deans connector will come apart. especially if the battery is using 10awg wires.

You know what can work too is pipe cleaner from arts store or plastic twist ties to hold the 2 parts together of the Deans connector in between the positive and negative wires. Wrap around and give a few twists.

Ran my first SMC race pack this weekend and wow was extremely happy with the performance actually better than another race pack I had got for twice the price. Can't go wrong on this deal

Try Hobbyking XT-60 or XT-90.. You will never look back

On Topic:
Would love to try SMC but can't seem to find them in The Netherlands or somewhere close in Europe..

What did they do about the puffed pack? Did they replace or were you SOL? Sounds like it was a known issue on that pack.....

I have 4 Extreme Race 4000mah 100C and each one of them puffed. But I have no problems running them and they still kick ass after a year of them doing so.

Hmm... I run the hell outta mine not even a mm of puff. Take good care of them? Storage mode after use, balance charge them?

Yep, balance charged every time, stored between races (race every Friday) at 3.85v. Charged at 1c. Never discharged lower than 3.7v.

Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining, just stating that they did puff and I have no concern from a performance side.

You don't have any concerns about running a puffed pack?

Nope. Since it puffed from the first charge, and each one did it, I took it as part of the design. Yes, maybe that may be a flaw or maybe not. But I have read other manufactures mention their batteries may puff slightly, and I believe that the hard case is just really tight around the soft pack. These batteries have not changed in the amount of deformation in more expansion or shrinking. So I have taken it for lack of a better word, as growing pains. Once puffed after the first charge, it hasn't budged. And has gone through an avg of 120 charge/discharge cycles per battery.

I do have LRP Super Shorties I run in my buggy that haven't puffed, but it is a translucent case and you can see a gap between the inside of the hard case and the soft cells. So if those suckers ever puff the hard case, then I think I might have a problem. lol.
