Default Setup Update

I had Mo's setup on the car and did not like it at all. Everyone that drove it hated it. Talk to Thomas @ Tekno and he said I should try new 1.5 x 6 hole pistons and non vented shock caps. The reason for the non vented shock caps was I thougth I needed rebound in the shocks. So I tried them along with a different setup that one of the electric guys was running and the car was not better at all. Now Im at the point to where this car is going on the chopping block.

So I regrouped myself and thought if everyone says Mo set is so awesome then it has to be me. So I did a alittle more research on setups and I kepted seeing all the pros setup sheets say something like 18m to 50% rebound on that shocks, but when you look at youtube videos they are all building the shocks dead. So now I come back to Mo's setup. I set the car up exactly the way the set goes but remembering what Thomas told me about the difference in the 1.5x6 vs the 1.2x10 hole pistons, so I decided to use the 1.5 hole pistons with the vented caps bc I wanted my shocks as dead as possible. (Is it just me but those damn Tekno pistons and shock caps are expensive as hell).. Anyways, I also changed the c block pill from one dot down to two dots down. the goal was to give it more anti squat.

Fellas let me tell you the results were awesome. The car had the rear traction I have been searching for. It jumped and landed like a cat. I was too impressed with Mo's setup. I qualify 4th for the 15min A main and for the first time I caught and pass the lead racers and was able to hold them off for a while until I came in to pit at 9 mins. As soon as I left pit lane I got caught up on the pipe in the sweeper and the marshal didnt get to me until I flamed out. (I lowered the idle before the main.) I told the pit crew not to start me back up as I ran off the driver stand celebrating like I won the race. Everyone in attendence said that was the best they have ever seen me drive. They said I looked so smooth getting in and out of turns. They also was able to see the acceleration on this car. I have never been so happy.

I know a lot of you guys like the 1.2x10 hole pistons and I know Mo has done hours of testing and thats fine, but if you can get the new pistons you own it to yourself to try. Thats the only real thing I changed and it worked wonders for me.

awesome it worked out!!!
My set up is simply a starting point to go off of and fine tune as you like it and it sounds like you did just that which is fantastic!!! shocks will greatly depend on traction and bumps. not all tracks are like what I am running on. I ended up changing my shock at a last race I was at due to track conditions. (which I will post a set up for med bite with a dusty top coat) and my car too was better.
I went with 8 hole 1.3 and 10 degree caster blocks. and a few other small changes.
right now though going back to the 10 hole since its going to indoor racing next.

I know. I had a few friends at that race with you and they said the track was real loose. You had to have a discipline throttle finger. Everyone had to change their setup. Can you send me the tuning guide? Also will the electric car perform like this with your setup?

Well, it turns out nothing else was broken after all, I was just a big dumbass after last weeks rebuild of the diffs. Somehow forgot to reinstall the 2 screws shown! Really surprised it worked as well as it did Got the rear body mount and drive shaft ordered yesterday (along with a few other things) and should be ready to go for the last round of JBRL (dont think there is anything else happening between now and then).

I have heard several people using it on their Ebuggy but I personally have not as I don't run electric yet. as far as the set up guide I am not sure where that is at. Tekno had one a while ago but it seems to have disappeared. I have written a few for various companies and have some out there though.

How far in do all of you tighten the post that hold on the brake pads? All the way in then back off just enough to let it roll or do you want some play in them?

I tighten them all the way, then slightly back them off so that the diff spins freely when no brakes are applied. And while I have the center diff assembly out, I set my brake bias by applying the brakes and then trying to turn the diff out drive front and rear. I generally run a little more front brake bias and this method has helped me set my brakes almost perfectly!

also FYI for those that aren't a huge fan of the stock brakes. I saw Matt was testing the fiber brakes from the e buggy options and I put them on the new car I built. have to awesome!
so if you are looking for a different brake set up you can do it with all tekno parts!

Good to hear! That is the only thing that I havent been able to get to my liking thus far. Do you have to buy TKR5206X or can the rotors be purchased separately? Same pads or do you use the EBs pads? And yes, guess I am getting old (over the hill in a few months ).

I will be testing this setup this weekend. So far it looks like the brakes will be more progressive than with the stock setup.

It took me a while but I finally got the stock brakes to work perfectly but I like the idea of trying the fiber rotor.

That said, one thing I have helped a lot of guys with is their brake setup. A lot guys didn't have the brake linkage set properly. The two "arms" that connect to the brake linkage have a lot of mechanical throw before the brakes actually engage so to mitigate this issue, you will want to move the collet thats closest to the front of the car a little closer to the rear, if that makes any sense. This way when you hit the brakes, the brakes actually engage, otherwise the first half of the brake travel doesn't actually do anything and your brakes will feel soft. I will try to post pictures later.
