Depends on what you're looking to achieve.
The piston will travel faster on the tapered side. I run mine with the taper facing the seals. With that, I still have good pack on compression, but they rebound more quickly. What that translated into on the track (1.6 all the way around with 32.5/27.5) was VERY plush low speed dampening, and a very smooth feel.

I have seen more rear towers snap here. I think the new rear towers are a softer plastic.

I dremeled mine and my front tower is now 9 months old. And it is holding fine. I have broken 3 rear towers. They ere dremeled, but the towers never actually broke where I dremeled. So doubtful it was the cause. These "updated" towers might be weaker. I am waiting for them to break before i replace.
