The 3 speed in my XL was pretty cool. You just have to find a compromise, what shifts well on the street won't shift well in the grass. The engine may struggle to shift gears off road if you tune it...

After upgrading the shocks on my Savage XL, it was practically bullet proof, except for the front and rear ring and pinion. Aluminum diff cases would probably solve that. I used to jump it at the top...

Ran it today and ended the run right at 3.79-3.8 volts per cell, completely by chance. I stuck it on the charger for "long term storage" and it was done in 40 seconds!! Tore up the body a little...

You could still do dual if you want to get crafty... Put the other servo where the shift servo is and make a mount for a micro servo where the receiver is and find a new spot for the rx.
