We tried the rebar idea a few years ago and it is problematic for 2 reasons:
First, when a car run into the pipe it lifts up as there is nothing to hold...

I have the same conversion like you and I use the kyosho spur without any problems on my 8ight.
I suggest you put an O-ring between the spur and the bearing and it will help you to push it out....
