I agree with Ty, they are worth converting! Boat, motor, ESC, and servo cost me around $100, already had a Spektum radio and recievers. As much fun as a $500 boat if you have creeks and streams to run in! Plus if you bust the hull, 40-45 bucks will get you a new complete boat.
CBR Could you post some links where to buy these boats from? Thanks

We were getting them from www.raidentech.com and www.xenonproject.com but they are both sold out right now. Ebay is probably your best bet.

These boats look really fun. I have been looking for something fun to blast around the Marina were my Dad's boat is docked. Sailboats are just to expensive and I didn't want the hassle of Nitro. Other than bashing with these things is there a place to race RC boats or is it just pure backyard fun?

These aren't terribly entertaining on ponds or lakes, creeks and moving water is where it's at! If you need any help building one just ask, I've done 3 now and it is really easy to convert them if you have a little time and basic skills! (and by that I mean screwdriver and shoe-goo lol)

I'm brand new to boats. Bought a new FasTech Formula B/L. Found out about these while I was researching other stuff so I bought one on Ebay.
TY any chance you could post a "parts list"...which motor/ESC/BAT combo you found to work well. I'm also new to LiPo power. If you haven't guessed, I'm old.
I'd like to get this little boat wet before it gets too cold outside.
Nobody at my hobby shop knows ANYTHING about these.
Thanx

The R1 isn't necessary, you can get cheaper ESCs out there that are watercooled. You really only need a minimum 50A to be safe, the boat I set up for a friend has a Seaking 80A.
Your motor choice can be easy or hard, I went with a 20mm size motor as most of them have a 2.3mm shaft and there is no modding necessary to install. I have seen boats with bigger 28mm motors on 3S and they scream, much faster than my two. Since I decided to run the 20mm size, I went with the HK 4800kV watercooled motor here: 2040SL WatercooledFor 2S you need 4000+kV to have any sort of speed. If you want to go 3S but stay with the 20mm size motors, something about 3000-3200 should get the job done ok. I think the best setup would be a 28mm motor and 3S, just for efficiency and, of course, fun factor with all that power, but the 20mm sure is nice to drop right in and go play.
Receiver is up to you really, I got lucky and could fit the R1 and the MR200 in the stock ESC box, which has a clip on lid with a seal and mounts up off the hull on some standoffsm, which is handy. I ran all my wires through the bottom hole and sealed it up with silicone, stays dry!
The servo, again, you could put in a bigger one but I wanted to keep these boats light so the acceleration didn't suffer, so I went with the HS-81mg. It seems to have enough power to swing the pump nozzle, although sometimes they both kind of lock up, I haven't figured that out yet, but it has yet to do it to me in the water, just on the bench. May need a cap in the RX. I used the stock "servo" mount by cutting the back post off and re-mounting it to the correct width of the servo like this:

For LiPos, I stuck to some smaller cheap ones. They are a 15C discharge rate, 20C burst and have been performing well in my boat. I started with just one, but the runtime was short, the system would start stuttering under power about halfway through and it was not balanced well, turning very hard left and lazily right. Once I paralleled them up all has been well and they dont' even get warm.
My builds I tried to keep as easy as possible, using the stock hardware where I could, which worked out very nice. To make installing the motor a breeze, I drilled holes on either side of the jet pump in the transom:
(this was before I did the hole on the right side)
Then I just taped over the right hole and ran the cooling line through the left one, worked out pretty good. After all the work my boat has a clean layout and runs all day long!

ESC is pretty much up to you, motor wise I wouldn't go any bigger than a 25mm, the jet can only push so much water and when you get over the threshold of max thrust it just cavitates and doesn't go any faster, it actually decreases performance. I think a bigger motor than what I have chosen on 3S is the ticket. Probably about a 3000kV 25mm motor, would push the boat better than the 20mm motor on 2S.
