I've been looking at one of these motors for a bit now. Has anyone done a comparison of them vs another motor they might own? Does anyone know when the 6.5 will be available?

Post#2289 in the SMC Lipo Batteries thread talks about a motor comparison...

Good to hear that as I will most likely release some motors in small quantities to get feedback on how they perform in different classes.

FWIW these seem to be based on the Dualsky motor, I've run those for over a year now and they're great motors on par with anything else on the market

anyone have any base gearing recommendations? I'm running a Blitz 18/88 to start... Tekin RS Gen 2 ESC... dropping in the new motor/esc due to my melt down and wanted to see if any of you thought that was too hot a ratio

I had a chance to race my SMC SM-1 6.5t in my Caster S10b 4wd buggy this past weekend and I think I like it. I don't have a ton to compare it with but I just switched from a Viper VST 7.5t. I geared it down a bit and after some practice even more as I was nearly airborne at the end of the main straight. Motor performed well all day and was consistent during the main. No complaints on day 1. The one thing I did notice was that the motor is noisier than the Viper.

The viper is a sealed can, isn't it? You'll get more noise with an open can design like the SM-1. But, I would think the SM-1 will outperform the Viper in any situation.

I'm liking my 10.5 a lot :)

Just check your bearing and make sure they are lubed. But yes, some motors are louder than others. We had a local that had a really loud reedy 8.5. He changed the sensor board, bearings and rotor but could not get the noise to go away. He said it ran fine and temped out great, but was just noisy.

Yes the Viper is sealed...which makes me feel a bit safer, especially outdoors with my B4. This is in my 4wd so the motor doesn't get as dirty as in the B4.

its a good habit to open up and clean / relube your motors after every weekend if you run on a dusty track. But most motors have seals to separate the exposed can from the vents. My 22 buggy has a cutout in the motor guard that lines up with the cutout in my motor. So the motor vent get packed full of clay/dirt and i have to pick it out with a tool. But when I open up my motor its normally pretty clean around the rotor. I have not opened up the SMC motor to see if they used seals.

Just put a SMC 6.5t in my DEX410v3. Power seems good enough. No boost or timing or whatever else(my ESC doesn't have it). End bell timing is at 0. Temped 155 after ripping around on our 1/8 scale track with a 24t pinion.

I wish it had better braking. I run this thing on turf mostly, and really, the only thing I miss from the HW4700 I pulled out are the brakes. Even with the ESC set to 100%, it just doesn't seem like wants to stop very well.

More than enough on dirt though, I'm sure.

Dude you are comparing apples and oranges here, The HW is a 4 pole motor, the SMC 6.5 is a 2 pole motor. If you want more brake depending on your esc and radio you should be able to dial some into it through one of those. Irace on ozite carpet and the brakes work plenty on my 8.5, i will trying it out on clay this Saturday for the first time.

BillyT. 10-22-2013 01:56 PM

Oh I know... not knocking it at all. I honestly was expecting to be underwhelmed by acceleration, not braking. And while it doesn't have that brute force of the 4 pole, it still moves just about as fast over all.

Also, our turf track is pretty small, so I'm used to charging into the corners... I don't remember the 10t I had being that way, but it's been a while since I ran that thing. Just need some time to adjust is all.

Over all, I'm super impressed with the motor, especially for the price, just like all of SMCs stuff.

I'll re-calibrate and see what happens. Or maybe I didn't even actually save it when I changed brake force to 100... hmmm...

WIGMAN 10-22-2013 03:35 PM

Yes yes, well worth the $50 I paid for my 8.5, I will be getting a 10.5 as soon as they become available, hopefully the 13.5's will be on their way soon as well.

Joel Lagace 10-22-2013 07:12 PM

my XB4 is loaded with the 8.5 awaiting our indoor astro turf track to open :)

CANT WAIT!
