Yea...that will be the hard part as it is typically going to be him taking off down to a friend's house with the truck and running full 6500 2S lipos down to LVC.

+1 good read. looks like all my outdoor vehicles including my daughters will be equipped with VTX8's.

May even get her a 1/8 E buggy for next year :)

Any plans for a "just stock" style ESC from viper? Running a VTA class, so on the cheap using some blinky enabled Speed Passion GT2.0 Pros But, I do like to keep everything all in the family and wanting to eventually move towards a fully USVTA legal setup.

So after seeing a 10 minute old RX8 Gen 2 implode itself yesterday my decision is made that I will not be putting any Tekin ESC in any of my cars. We have had way too many just go up in smoke. I am running Viper in all my 10th scale gear and am well pleased. Looking to the VTX8. Are there many reports of them just burning up?

The most complaint I have seen has been they just stop working when it does fail. I haven't read or heard of full on flame ups. With the warranty they offer at 6 months, I like the fact you are covered for awhile, part of the reason I went viper was because of that.

I just had to get past my sensored only hang up :)

I bought a used VTX8 that came with no wires. I wired it up and when I tried it it literally went up in smoke. My bad for trying to save some money and buy used. The PO worked with me and there are no hard feelings but I'd love to know why it went up in smoke. I can't blame Viper for this as the PO or myself could have been at fault but of course neither of us thinks it was his fault. :)

I have 2 VTX10Rs, a VTX10, a VTX10BE and all have been rock solid. Just installed a Copperhead in a SCTE for my son to bash with. When I buy an ESC moving forward it will always be a Viper and at some point I hope to try the VTX8 again.

Ok on a totally different topic: can someone help me with brushless motor care? I knew what to do 25 years ago with brushed motors, constant cleaning, cut the comm, clean the brushes and comm, adjust the springs. With brushless I thought it was...well nothing...but I recently had my VTS8.5 die and opening it up it had dirt in it (thought it was sealed) and clearly I got it wet (again thought it was sealed) which in the end did it in.

How often should I open up the can and clean out the motor? Just air or motor cleaner? Anything else I should be doing or not doing to help the motor last a good long time?

I open up the motor and blow it out with compressed air about once a month and check the bearings and replace as needed. I never use chemicals on the motor. I also check the rotor for metal stuff sticking to it. If there is small metal filing on the magnet, try to use high pressure compressed air to blow off most of it and they full the rest off with my fingers. The dirt locally is not very dusty, so my motors normally look pretty good inside. But i once bought a used one from Florida and it was filthy inside. So it really depends on the dirt you race on.

There will be a number of us attending the JConcepts Fall Indoor Champs this weekend at RCE. If you guys are around, stop by and say hi :)

Generally speaking if a unit 'goes up in smoke' there is reason behind it. Mostly it's due to a short - these 4 pole motors can start to fail but keep running. So that short has to go somewhere and either will pop the capacitors or melt the wires, then live wires touch each other setting off a reaction.

If the esc fails, the high majority of the time it will just stop. But mostly we see units that have either had a motor short the system or ones that were run too hot and caused damage. That being said, we really don't see that many, compared to what we have sold.

curious, is it possible to put something on a motor that when a short condition occurs, it doesn't take down the ESC? (sorry, don't know more about specifics on this, just throwing that out there)
