Just thought I'd put it out there if anyone has had a similar experience, it's already a question in the Electrics area.

Both times I've run my new buggy with the VTX8 at the track I have lost a battery due to Cell 1 being toast. First was a practice day where I depleted the batteries I brought and after storage charging at home when I next pulled it out for bench testing I found it dead. Old battery, no worries.

Then on Sunday racing I raced 7mins a time and charged in between but the fourth charge had issues and when I tried to finish it at home the same problem, balance error, Cell 1 dead. This time a brand new Nano-tech. This has never happened before and I'd like it not to happen again.

The VTX8 was on original FW with stock LVC, I've raised it to 3.4 now but the racing battery never got depleted, the old practice one did, and was only used in the buggy that one time.

I'm trying to pinpoint what could be happening as it only just started with the new setup, which I am otherwise happy with.

Ya im running it mid now with 3 gear. Works great so far lol. By the way I love Viper products. I replaced all my Tekin setups with Viper stuff except for one car now. I couldn't be happier. So when are the 8th scale motors coming? :)

Viper R/C Copperhead-R ESC & VX4R.45 4-Pole 550 Sensorless Brushless Motor problem

Okay, lately I've been doing some jumps...nothing major but sometimes when it lands it stops running and the two outer lights on the switch just flash until I shut it down. When they're flashing, it doesn't move or respond to any input.
I can hold the button to power down...and then turn it back on and everything is fine. If it's a loose connection it would be internal I suppose...
Anybody had this problem with this combo?
Thanks

Found out what was up with my vtx8. User error. didnt scroll far enough to see that besides change setting and load settings there is this little one that says save setting........makes a big difference! lol works fine now.

Yeah that save function is just crazy lol

Anyone using the motor temp cutout with a vtx10r and viper motor

naa I don't bother. I just temp it myself with a gauge and adjust. I guess you could, you just have to remember that it measures temp on the inside, not outside like we are used too....

Not a 10r, just a 10 with an 8.5 in an SC10. I've left it at 220 and I've only ever hit that during an 8 minute main when I was way over boosted.

Genebaby - Not sure if I understand the question. You had two different battery failures. Did either battery ever hit LVC? Or go below? How old were the batteries? Had they been used previously? Maybe PM me the answers if it takes too much detail.

hellssephiroth- glad to see things are working good

Graveyard - it could be that the landing is causing the bullet connectors plugs move, if they arc, it can "fool" the esc into a thermal shutdown. Unless you are seeing that the motor or esc temps are high when you are running?

sickpuppy1 - Glad its working, don't worry, I did the same thing once.

OMG23RC - I have seen racers do it both ways. I always recommend checking with a temp gun. You do need to be quite mindful with the 4wd, it can get hot in there.

I'm running a copperhead system with the 4500kv motor in my TRCE Slash 4x4 and want to gear up. What temp should I keep the motor and esc under?

OMG23RC 04-16-2013 12:08 AM

Guys I'm geared 81/21 and my temps after a 6 min main are 60c for esc and 80c for motor. I'm on a large outdoor track 30-31 secs a lap. Anyhelp? I have it stock on profile 2. Running vtx10r and vst 8.5

Just quickly on batteries, it seems the ones I initially chose to race with and my old sets, were not a good match for the VTX8.

I thought the Monster in my Vorza was a high power ESC, and I was using some 30C batteries just fine, as my introduction to brushless, lipo 1/8 RC. These in a 5000mah config pump out 150A, enough for the Mamba Monster, just by luck I guess.

One of those died at practice but I didn't think much of it.

I used my new Nano-tech's at racing on the weekend and did some races with a 3300mah 65C brand new battery. After the third race it didn't charge right so I used another and it was DOA when I checked it at home, same problem as the older battery, Cell 1 at zero.

It seems the 3300 65C battery can deliver 215A, still under what the Viper can ask for. Does this all sound about right?

I also have some 5000 Nano-tech's to use, but also four 3300's left, which I am not sure what to do except use them in the Vorza, which is my spare until the second EB48 is built, and then it's my daughters car to learn on.

I thought a 65C rating was pretty good and figured that 3300mah was just a shorter run time/lighter pack.

I just dont know how the esc could kill 1 out of 4 cells back to back like that. The only way is if one cell was weak and hte lvc was too low. Under a heavy load, the weaker cell could be pulled below the lvc and killed. If the other cells were much stronger, then the overall voltage might have been good enough to stay above and not trip the lvc. Aside from raising the lvc and maybe getting a better pack, I dont see how you could avoid this. Just because a pack is new, does not mean the cells are matched or that one is not weak.
