It doesn't really matter if you have two or twenty. For almost every RC track out there you need an RC4 transponder nowadays, so that is what people tend to have (or will likely need at some point in the future). Buying into a different system with no compatibility just is not an attractive option for most people.

Yep. For a club you want to use something that is compatible with today's equipment most people have and for a backyard racer this is just too expensive.

That's true. RC3 are obsolete. Actually, if you're racing, there's even no use in buying a hybrid transponder. It's just more expensive and has worse reliability as it transmits both protocols. Just buy a regular RC4 transponder and be done with it.

I actually own one hybrid though, as there is a nice track around here who are not yet on RC4.That's the exception though, and I'd personally never get more than a single one of these. My other transponders (three IIRC) are RC4 only.

This decoder can read all types of Vostok transponders, MRT, AMB RC, AMB DP, Mylaps rc4 hybrid transponders and have a lot of features: Internal backup battery, Bluetooth audio transceiver, Wifi/Ethernet/USB interfaces.
All for running is included in the box: loop, coaxial cable, some power adapters/wires and transponder too.
It works with a many scoring software as LapsFree, RCM, RCgarage, Zround, ,Flipside racing, RCSP, RC-timing and many other software including application for Android (for direct data reading from Decoder to your smartphone!).
Cheap transponders. Friendly seller :-)

Now this system have one of the best price / value ratio.
All works well.
Tested ;-)

this would be an excellent option for bigger backyard tracks.

do the mylaps systems work through bluetooth? e.g. I can run it off my phone and not need a laptop or desktop?
Guess I could get a cheap laptop and such if needed...
thanks

Not that I'm aware of. I have an old, dedicated, desktop that I use for my MyLaps system. IIRC, it's running Vista; it's that old.

The Mylaps decoder can be reached over a network and I have seen some home made apps to get the practice times as long the netwerk is also accessible by WiFi. I have not seen complete race directing software on a mobile.

Also when the decoder is connected by a mobile network adapter and registrated to the speedhyve server you can use the Speedhyve app to check the laptimes.

IMHO
  • Mylaps decoder & transponder
    • Industry standard. No doubt about it.
    • Its weatherproof because using RF ID technology (i dont know for snow coz there is no winter season in Indonesia).
    • Its Expensive, but you can afford it by buying used one by raise some money with your member to buy used system with some transponders.
    • Good investment coz you can rent it to track or club who needs it for their event
  • Easylap
    • Standard system for 1/28 class but some 1/10 class also use it.
    • Cheap, thanks to Infra Red technology
    • The downside is not weatherproof. And you have to use more IR sensors to prevent lost signal
And For Lap Counting Software. IMHO
  • Easylap
    • Cheap.
    • It was standard for 1/28 race timing.
    • Works on Easylap and Mylaps.
    • The downside is you have to patience with the errors.
  • LiveRC, Race Control Management, Scoring Pro
    • Not cheap because you have to buy the license.
    • Almost work with any decoder system.
    • Good after sales is you have problem.
Sorry for bad English.

The MYLaps decoder works over the network. So theoretically scoring software could be made to work on Android or iOS. I am not aware of any though. If you look at the cost of a MyLaps system, the computer cost is the least of your worries.
