Sounds like you're running rich.
Is there a lot of unburned fuel in your exhaust pipe?

Try #5 plug. If you run 16%,don't forget take off some shims.(0.3mm is enough for 16%)

if you run 16% you need to take out the cooper shim which is 0.2mm the aluminium shim is 0.3mm.

OK i just took out the copper shim and it's not doing what it was so it's better. I am going out to the track tomorrow so I can actually get some track time.

With a bit of luck it will go ok.

Thanks for your help all.

I finally got the D3 in the car and decided this past Sunday would be the perfect time to break it in. I charged up my starter box, and immediately stuck the piston TDC. This thing is tight.

I am currently using an Associated box, and will try my dual motor Ofna box tonight. If that doesn't work, a freind will let me borrow his 1/8 scale Ofna box with the bigger motor.

Needless to say, I can see how it would be hard on the conrod bushings on break-in.

Same here.

I've put a litre through it so far and it still sticks at TDC.

you'l be doing yourself a favor if you pre-heat that engine rather than just force it to turn over witha more powerful box. use a heat gun or hair blower on it. it really helps, and the conrod will thank yu for it. also, remember to get some fuel in there before just letting her rip on the box to prime it as it will be dry to start....

Big thumbs up to tallyrc, I ALWAYS pre-heat my engines when breaking them in. A lot less stress on internal parts.

Just think how tight it is, now think how fast its turning over when you first start it.. not real nice...

That is sound advice. I did put some oil in the motor before trying to turn it over to no avail.

I will try the heat gun on it tonight.

If it is so tight, you can also try backing off the glow plug (loosen it) a little, just to get it started.

I didn't have the glow plug in it. I really wasn't trying to start it as much as I was just seeing if the starter box I had would turn it past TDC.

Heat is my last hope, or else the polishing compound comes out.

more on the polishing compound....I assume you polish the entire piston just a bit, but what about the sleeve? The whole sleeve or just the top edge?
