hi everyone, i ran my jl3 engine first time on turkish nats. our Amains are 1hour long, and i was using the skyline pipe. i ran it with stock gasket out of the box, but manifold seemed a little big for that. after 15mins in final, my manifolt's holes ripped, and exhaust came off. is that happened because i didnt use the thicker gasket came with the engine?
one more question: how can i make new holes for the manifolt?
sorry for bad english, thanks for the replies.

There is no such thing as a base setting. One should NEVER turn the needle all the way in, in order to count the turns out. The needle is made of hard steel, while the seat is soft brass. Turning needle in all the way can damage the seat. Needle settings vary so much from effects of atmospheric changes, fuel brands, glow plugs, etc. That one persons settings cannot be accurate for another anyway. Just fire it up and make it too rich... lean out 1/8 of a turn at a time, making high speed passes, till it clears out and makes good power.

I've never had to use base settings on carb needles.... even when the engine is brand new. 99.9% of the time the factory sets the needles to a slightly rich condition right from the start. I don't like turning needles all the way into the carb because it causes undue shear stress on the o-ring needle seals. Even with a brand new engine...if it starts you're in the ball park of tuning. I see so many people start making pretty big adjustments to carb needles if an engine doesn't start.
